Smart Highway is a motorway that will interact with the driver via lights and self-sustaining energy in order to provide the driver with information about road conditions and to help the environment. Interactions with the driver will occur with glow-in-the-dark paint and interactive lights that will only turn on while a car is detected. Studio Roosegaarde envisioned the smart highway, while Heijmans will help with it's construction. The release of the product is estimated to be around the middle of 2013 in the Netherlands.

Features

Dynamic Paint

Dynamic paint, developed by Studio Roosegaarde, is a glow-in-the-dark powder that will be charged by sunlight during the day and glow for 10+ hours during the night. This paint will replace the traditional paint used to split lanes or write text on the ground. Dynamic Paint will let the road visually communicate with the driver, similar to how road paint warns a driver of an upcoming stop sign. Dynamic Paint will also provide added safety because of its ability to glow only when a specific temperature is detected. Black ice is a threat that catches drivers off guard because it can be impossible to see. With the use of Dynamic Paint, large snowflakes that would normally be invisible, will cover the road and warn the driver of these threats. Even in the absence of a light source, the Dynamic Paint would illuminate the path a driver should follow.[1]

Interactive Light

Interactive Lights are similar to street lamps except they will only turn on when the driver is nearing the light. The lights will know when to turn on and off with an array of sensors that signal the lights to turn on in front of the car and then off once it has passed. The lights will smoothly grow brighter as a car approaches so there are no distractions from flashing lights. Since the company thrives to be environmentally friendly, this feature would stop the waste of electricity by leaving the lights off when there are no cars.[2]

Wind Light

Wind Lights are similar to Dynamic Lighting because they consider environmental health. A light source in the middle of a small turbine would light up as natural or car-induced wind drafts hit and spin the turbine. The spinning would create self-sufficient energy to light up the roads. A combination of interactive lights and wind lights would mean more efficient means of lighting and energy conservation.[2]

Induction Priority Lane

The Induction Priority lane is a single lane that charges an electric vehicle with the use of magnetic fields and induction coils embedded within the tarmac. A hybrid driver will be able to drive onto this lane and the battery in the car would get recharged. This feature is to be added near 2015, a couple years after release. The Induction Priority Lane will also increase the reliability of hybrid cars because the induction lane would help solve the issue of expensive hybrids with sub-optimal batteries. Hybrids will become a more reliable source of transportation for longer trips and daily commute. [2]

Companies

Studio Roosegaarde
Studio Roosegaarde is a Dutch, social design lab founded by Daan Roosegaarde and is the mastermind behind the Smart Highway project. The lab consists of a team of artists and engineers. They are known for creating technology driven, conceptual and interactive structures with an artistic touch. They have other projects including Dune and Sustainable Dance Floor. Most of their projects are themed around energy conservation with futuristic traits.[3]
Heijmans

Heijmans is the company behind the construction of the Smart Highway and is cooperating with Studio Roosegaarde in order to turn Roosegaarde's ideas into reality. Heijmans operates in Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany and is experienced in real estate, housing, utilities, road, and civil work. [4]They are working on multiple projects with some dating to 2016.[5] Heijmans has 8,300 employees and reported a revenue of €2.4 billion ($3,193,680,000) in 2011.[4]

Location and Release

The construction will begin mid-2013 and continue for five years. The first few hundred meters of the road will be placed in the province of Brabant in Southern Holland. Dynamic Paint will be the first feature added during construction of the highway. During the next five years, features such as the Interactive Lights, Wind Lights, and Induction Priority Lanes will be added. There are also plans to expand to India and America. Self sustaining light sources for India's roads is especially important because India is constantly experiencing blackouts.[6] [7]
