The Flash is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Flash. It is intended to be the twelfth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film will be directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, with a screenplay by Ezra Miller and Grant Morrison, from a story by Seth Grahame-Smith, Mazeau and Rick Famuyiwa. It stars Ezra Miller as the titular character, with Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup as supporting characters. It is the fourth live-action theatrical film featuring the character, following Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016) and Justice League (2017), and will be the first full-length feature film centered around the character.

The film is expected to be released in 2021, however no official information have been announced.[1]

Cast

  • Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash:

A Central City police forensic investigator who can move at superhuman speeds and vibrate at a molecular level, through his abilities to access the Speed Force. On how his portrayal of The Flash would differ from that of Grant Gustin's in The CW's TV series, Miller explained, "Well, [first] it's going to be a movie [...] I'd like for it to be an exploration of a human being, a multi-dimensional human being, to speak." He added, "I'd like the character to have many dimensions. But really, I’d like him to have the usual dimensions we know and love, and then some extra ones that are part of the amazing consideration of this superhero. I hope to realize him as a person, and I think what's most exciting for me in superhero mythologies is when we feel the humanity of someone who is heroic — or the heroism of someone who is a flawed, deeply human person."[2]

  • Kiersey Clemons as Iris West:

A journalist for the Picture News and love interest of Barry Allen. This version of Iris, who is Caucasian in the comics, is portrayed as African-American due to Clemons' ethnicity.[4]

  • Billy Crudup as Henry Allen:

Barry's father, who was blamed for the murder of his wife.[4]

Production

Development

Warner Bros. hired comic book writer Jeph Loeb to write a screenplay in the late-1980s, but the outing never materialized.[5] Development for a film adaptation was revived after the studio was impressed with David S. Goyer's script for Batman Begins, and he was offered his choosing of a Flash or Green Lantern film adaptation.[6] In December 2004 it was announced that David S. Goyer would be writing, producing and directing The Flash.[7] He approached his Trinity co-star Ryan Reynolds for the Barry Allen role,[6] with the intention of also using Wally West as a supporting character.[8] Goyer's script, which he tonally compared to Sam Raimi's work on the Spider-Man trilogy,[6] was influenced by seminal comic book runs by Mike Baron, Mark Waid, and Geoff Johns. By 2007, however, Goyer dropped out of the project, citing creative difference with the studio.[8]

With the financial success of Night at the Museum, Warner Bros. hired Shawn Levy to direct The Flash in February 2007. Levy would oversee the writing of a new draft, using elements of Goyer's script.[9] Levy instead went to work on Battle of the Smithsonian, and was replaced by David Dobkin in October 2007. Dobkin developed The Flash as a spin-off of Justice League: Mortal, focusing on the Wally West character.[10] Craig Wright was hired to write the script,[11] and, after the collapse of Justice League Mortal, Warner Bros. placed The Flash for a 2008 release date.[12] The project became delayed by the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike.[13] Warner Bros. then hired Charles Roven to produce The Flash, with comic book writer Geoff Johns serving as a consult and co-writer. Johns created a new film treatment, which was screenwriten by Dan Mazeau.[14]

In September 2009, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. had launched a new division, DC Entertainment Inc., in order to better expand the DC Brand. In October 2009, Charles Roven was asked of the future of the Flash. In the interview, Roven explained that he was involved but that he was removed from the project because The Flash was speeding in the direction Warner Brothers had in mind, leaving the possible film in uncertainty. The day after Dan Mazeau responded to the article by saying “Just to chime in on your latest article: The Flash has not been hobbled. Everything is moving forward as planned… I’m still writing the script. Geoff Johns is still consulting. Flash fans have no cause for concern, and — IMO — lots to be excited about.” In February 2010, it was reported that Warners is expected to announce its DC slate in the coming months populated by characters like The Flash and Wonder Woman."{{Citation needed|date=September 2010}}

In late February 2010 it was reported that the leading contender to helm The Flash is Greg Berlanti. Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Barry Meyer says they are getting close to giving the go-ahead for a movie.[15] On June 9, 2010 Green Lantern writers Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim were hired to pen a treatment of the film. The Flash script will apparently be based on the recent run by DC's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns.[16] Mazeau told Blastr.com that the studio are still actively developing the big screen take on the DC Comics' character and that the project is not dead yet.[17] On July 20, 2013, The Hollywood Reporter has reported that the film was rumored to be released in 2016 but it has not been announced.[18] On October 15, 2014, Warner Bros. announced The Flash will be release on March 23, 2018 as the sixth installment of the DC Extended Universe.[19]On April 9, 2015, Deadline reports that the studio has picked Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to rewrite the film.[20] In early October 2015, Seth Grahame-Smith was announced to be in negotiations to direct the film.[21] He later departed the project due to creative differences, with Warner Bros retaining the use of his script based off a treatment by Lord and Miller.[22]

By June, 2016, Warner Bros. hired Rick Famuyiwa to take over the directing duties of the film.[23]In late October, Famuyiwa left the project over "creative differences" with the studio.[24]

In January 2017, the studio hired Joby Harold to rewrite the whole draft from the start.[25] In May, it was revealed that Matthew Vaughn, Robert Zemeckis and Sam Raimi were shortlisted for the director's job, with Zemeckis established as the frontrunner as the studio would be willing to wait for him to complete production on his next project should he accept their offer .[26] In July, it was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that the film would be titled Flashpoint.[27] By September, Johns confirmed that the story of Thomas Wayne's Batman is a key element in the plot of the film.[28] Jeffrey Dean Morgan has expressed interest in reprising the role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.[29]Towards the end of September 2017, Famuyiwa revealed that he had finished a latest script revision for the film, teasing the possibility of Cyborg appearing.[30] Shortly thereafter, he left the project citing creative differences with the studio. In January 2018, it was announced that filmmaking duo, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, entered negotiations to direct the movie. The studio reportedly had discussions with Ben Affleck to act as director, after Zemeckis couldn't free up his work schedule, but the former eventually passed on the opportunity as well.[31] Daley and Goldstein were announced as the official co-directors of the movie in March of the same year.[32]

In March 2019, with his deal for the film due to expire in May, star Miller teamed with writer Grant Morrison to write the screenplay.[33]

Casting

On October 15, 2014, it was announced that Ezra Miller would play the title role in the film and in both upcoming Justice League films.[34] In July 2016, Variety reported that Kiersey Clemons was director's top choice for the female lead role in the film,[35] while The Hollywood Reporter{{'}}s Borys Kit revealed that Rita Ora and Lucy Boynton were also among the list of top-runner actresses.[36] Clemons was eventually confirmed to star as the female lead, Iris West.[37]In August, actor Ray Fisher was confirmed to appear in the film.[38]

In September, Billy Crudup was revealed to be in talks to portray Barry Allen's father in the film.[4] In September 2017, Deadline reported that Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman.[39]

Filming

The Flash principal photography was scheduled to begin in February 2019, with filming taking place at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in the United Kingdom, and Atlanta, Georgia in the United States.[40]

but the start of principal photography has been pushed back and is expected to start in late 2019, with a 2021 release date.[41]

Release

The Flash was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on March 23, 2018.[19] It was later advanced to March 16, 2018,[42] which was eventually given to Tomb Raider.[43] The project was put on hold after the departure of Famuyiwa, and is now currently projected for a 2021 release.[1]
