Honorable Justice Vinjamuri Govindaraja Chari (1895 - 1949), was an accomplished civil & criminal law judge and practitioner/lawyer in the Madras High Court. He was born in a prestigious family in the Tamilnadu (present day) area. He left his family and village at a very young age, to pursue a career in Law at the Madras High Court, which was established, administered and dominated by the British. He rose to prominence within a short time at the high court. His profound knowledge of law and his ethics were highly respected by his Indian and English colleagues and friends. He lived in Mylapore, Madras (Chennai) and actively participated in the community until his untimely death. His many contributions to the Indian law system are chronicled in history and can be found at the Chennai High Court and the Madras Law Journal. He was a genuine person in every aspect of life. He had the right temperament to deal with people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. He was a leader and trailblazer, because he was capable of organizing and directing situations to the desired goal, whether it was oriented towards family, relatives or friends and whether it was directed towards, personal or professional matters. He went on to educate and train several young students of law, in the intricacies of the justice system.

This biographical article only highlights the life of Honorable Justice Vinjamuri Govindaraja Chari. His seminal contributions to the Indian law system are significant and have taken their rightful place at the Chennai High Court. His portrait hangs in the halls of the Chennai High Court as being one of the visionaries of his time in civil & criminal law practice. A street in the city of Mylapore, Chennai, India was named 'Govindaraja Chari Avenue', as a tribute to this notable man. His important contributions are verifiable.
