Watchman Upstairs is a pioneering groovecore band from Port Huron, Michigan. Formed in late 2014, Watchman Upstairs spearheaded the metal and hard rock music scene in St. Clair County. Within months they had converted several venues that did not host metal acts, into thriving metal hot spots.

Lineup

The current line up as of February 2015:

  • Mick Papineau - Lead Vocals
  • Darcy LaFrance - Guitars
  • David LaFrance - Bass
  • Dan Ganim - Drums

History

The band had a rough beginning, mostly playing house parties and bars during the fledgling months. Soon after playing around Port Huron, and gaining a substantial following they had booked and played a sold out show at Harpo's in Detroit, opening for national act, Puddle of Mudd. They have headlined the local Port Huron area newspaper,"The Times Herald", appearing on the cover as "Leading Port Huron's Metal Movement".

Controversy

During February, 2015, a small Facebook controversy occurred when members of the band appeared alongside inflatable sex dolls as a promotional video. The video was reported, and removed, only to be posted again, along with a retaliation from the band.

The same dolls would appear as "groupies" at the band's show at Harpo's.

Genre

Though labeled groove metal by themselves, and metalcore by others, Watchman Upstairs has been coined as "groovecore", a more extreme version of the heavily Pantera-influenced genre. This name was first coined by an anonymous personal friend, and fellow musician of the band members.

Fans

The fans of Watchman Upstairs have been branded by the band as "Hooligans". The title comes from the song "Hooligan", a staple in the bands live set, and one of the most recognizable songs by the band.

Name

The name "Watchman Upstairs" is taken from David LaFrance's occupation as a nightwatchman for an upstairs storage facility located in Port Huron.
