‘’’Wickaninnish Inn’’’

The Original Wickaninnish Inn, 1964-1977

The original Wickaninnish Inn opened on July 1, 1964, closing November 14, 1977. Robin Fells, a former systems analyst with the Burroughs Corporation, was the creator and Resident Manager.

The Inn stood on a point just north of the 49th parallel at Wickaninnish Beach, in what is now known as the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve by Tofino, on the remote west coast of Vancouver Island. Accommodations featured 20 rooms with ocean view as well as two and three room suites. The Inn was equipped with a games room, sundeck with outdoor barbeque, all-electric heating, dining room, resident’s lounge and licensed premises with beach and ocean views.

In 1979, two thirds of the original structure was dismantled (contrary to rumours of a fire) to build the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre. The original Inn’s resident’s lounge, with its sway-back roof, now houses the Wickaninnish Restaurant, owned and operated by the Oak Bay Marine Group and unrelated to the present-day Wickaninnish Inn.

Present-Day Wickaninnish Inn, 1996-present

The present-day Wickaninnish Inn is a 75 room resort member of the Relais & Chateaux international association of individually-owned luxury hotels and restaurants, and is located on the westernmost point of Chesterman Beach, by the town of Tofino. The Inn is owned and operated by Tofino’s McDiarmid family, with Charles McDiarmid as on-site Managing Director.

Both Inn buildings offer ocean and beach views from all accommodations and public spaces: Wickaninnish-At-the-Pointe opened in August 1996 and houses 45 rooms, The Pointe Restaurant and Ancient Cedars Spa. A signature architectural feature is the south-facing (ocean-facing) rounded design of The Pointe Restaurant. In July 2002, Wickaninnish-On-the-Beach opened, with 12 suites and 18 rooms, as well as public spaces the Lookout Library and the beachside Driftwood Coffee Lounge.
