Doyle in 1901 as the Sterling Comb Company.[1] In 1912, the three men consolidated a number of smaller plastics manufactures under the name Viscoloid Company.[1] The company pioneered the use of pyroxylin plastic in hair combs, toilet articles, and a number of different products. In 1914, the Viscoloid Company began marketing pyroxylin plastic toys.[2] The toy industry quickly became the company’s most profitable, and the Viscoloid was soon the leading pyroxylin plastic toy manufacturer in America.[2] By 1923, Bernard Doyle had taken over the company and “The Viscoloid” spanned 106 buildings and was the largest employer in Leominster.[1][3] In 1925, the company was sold to the Dupont Company of Leominster and was renamed the Dupont Viscoloid Company, Inc.[3] The company would continually be a giant in the plastics industry until closing in November 1977.[2] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite book | author = Leominster Historical Commission Book Committee |author2=Tremblay, Gilbert P. | year = 2006 | title = Combing through Leominster's History | url = | chapter = Business and Industry | chapterurl = | publisher = Office of the Mayor | isbn = | pages = 145–174 | accessdate = 2012-12-23}} 2. ^1 2 {{cite news| url=http://www.plastics.com/content/articles/1/15/The-History-of-Celluloid/Page15.html| work=plastics.com| author1=Lauer, Keith| author2=Robinson, Julie| title=The History of Celluloid| date=January 17, 2013| deadurl=yes| archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20121110092634/http://www.plastics.com/content/articles/1/15/The-History-of-Celluloid/Page15.html| archivedate=November 10, 2012| df=}} 3. ^1 {{cite book | author = Hazzard, Thomas |author2=Sanabria, Diane | year = 1999 | title = Leominster | url = | chapter = Business and Industry | chapterurl = | publisher = Arcadia Publishing | isbn = | pages = 9–32 | accessdate = 2013-01-17}} 6 : Leominster, Massachusetts|Manufacturing companies established in 1901|Manufacturing companies disestablished in 1977|Defunct companies based in Massachusetts|1901 establishments in Massachusetts|1977 disestablishments in Massachusetts |
