Football careerBorn in Montevideo, Belza began his professional career with Spain's Atlético Madrid, playing three La Liga matches in the 1980–81 season.[1][2][3] He spent the next three years appearing with their reserves in the Segunda División and, after that, he played the next two campaigns back in South America, for Paraguay's Cerro Porteño and Club Nacional de Football in his homeland. In 1986, Belza returned to Spain, starting the season at second-tier club Rayo Vallecano[4] and concluding it in the service of RCD Mallorca in the top flight.[5] He was mostly back-up to the Moroccan Zaki in the following campaign, which ended with relegation, and concluded his career with CD Tenerife – playing regularly as they gained promotion to the top division in his first season[6]– and UD Las Palmas,[7] subsequently retiring at the age of 35. Whilst at the service of Las Palmas, Belza was sent off for the first and only time in his professional career on 5 April 1992, early into an eventual 0–3 second level away loss against Racing de Santander.[8] Post-retirementOn 3 February 2007, Belza was named as sporting director of the Uruguayan Football Association.[9] References1. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1981/04/13/pagina-10/1057678/pdf.html|title=1–1: El Atlético defendió su "chance"|trans-title=1–1: Atlético stood their ground|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=13 April 1981|accessdate=22 April 2015}} 2. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1981/04/20/pagina-12/1061142/pdf.html|title=2–0: Bastó un Madrid sin alardes para un apocado Atlético|trans-title=2–0: Easy-does-it Madrid was enough for too-little Atlético|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=20 April 1981|accessdate=22 April 2015}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1981/04/27/pagina-14/1064568/pdf.html|title=0–0: El sopor ganó en Albacete|trans-title=0–0: Dullness won in Albacete|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=27 April 1981|accessdate=22 April 2015}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1986/07/19/pagina-16/1138626/pdf.html|title=El Rayo no repara en fichajes|trans-title=Rayo keeps piling them up|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=19 July 1986|accessdate=23 April 2015}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1987/05/12/pagina-14/1450286/pdf.html|title=Belza, sustituto de Zaki en el Mallorca|trans-title=Belza, Zaki's replacement at Mallorca|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=12 May 1987|accessdate=23 April 2015}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1989/07/03/pagina-12/1199609/pdf.html|title=No hubo milagro en Sevilla|trans-title=No miracle in Seville|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=3 July 1989|accessdate=23 April 2015}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1990/07/23/pagina-19/1448188/pdf.html|title=Las Palmas, hoy a escena|trans-title=Curtains up for Las Palmas today|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=23 July 1990|accessdate=23 April 2015}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/1992/04/06/pagina-24/1428962/pdf.html|title=Recital cántabro tras el descanso|trans-title=Cantabrian festival after half-time|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|language=Spanish|date=6 April 1992|accessdate=23 April 2015}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.lr21.com.uy/deportes/245219-eduardo-belza-fue-nominado-como-nuevo-gerente-deportivo-de-la-auf|title=Eduardo Belza fue nominado como nuevo gerente deportivo de la AUF|trans-title=Eduardo Belza was named as the AUF's new sporting director|publisher=La Red 21|language=Spanish|date=3 February 2007|accessdate=22 April 2015}} External links
