Construction commenced in 1922, coinciding with the electrification of the Sydney network. It was located within the Chullora Railway Workshops complex on a 106 hectare site.[1] It was not electrified until 1939 requiring carriages to be hauled to and from the works by steam locomotive.[2] Elcar had a railway station that was served by worker's trains at shift changeover times.[3] It closed in March 1994, when maintenance of CityRail's electric fleet was taken over by UGL Rail's Maintrain facility at Auburn.[4] The site has been redeveloped as the Chullora Resource Recovery Park.[5] References1. ^Chullora Railway Workshops NSW Environment & Heritage {{coord missing|New South Wales}}2. ^{{cite book|last1=Oakes|first1=John|title=Sydney's Forgotten Goods Railways|date=2001|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|isbn=0 909650 54 3|pages=85–87}} 3. ^Elcar NSWrail.net 4. ^"Goninan's Maintrain Centre Officially Opened" Railway Digest May 1994 page 9 5. ^Chullora Resource Recovery Park Sita Australia 5 : Industrial buildings in Sydney|Railway workshops in New South Wales|1994 disestablishments in Australia|Municipality of Strathfield|History of transport in New South Wales |
