It was built between 1835 and 1839, and is a 2 1/2-story, three-bay, stuccoed brick central-hall-plan house in the Greek Revival style. It has a two-story rear ell. The front facade features a one-story Tuscan order portico consisting of paired rectangular wooden pillars supporting a full entablature.[3] Also on the property are the contributing servants' quarters (some former slave quarters), tack house, and spring house.[3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.[2] Today the property is used by a residential program for young men, called Elk Hill.[4] The property may be identical to one originally owned by Thomas Jefferson, known as "Elkhill" and inherited in part from his wife's family.[5] During the American Revolutionary War, Jefferson's Elkhill was occupied by Lord Cornwallis and his men for ten days, during which time they destroyed many of the crops on the plantation and slaughtered livestock for provisions. Jefferson visited the site not long after Cornwallis left, and later recorded what he had seen in a letter to William Gordon in Paris.[6] Notes and references1. ^{{cite web|title=Virginia Landmarks Register|url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/register_counties_cities.htm|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources|accessdate=5 June 2013}} 2. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.dhr.virginia.gov/registers/Counties/Goochland/037-0009_Elk_Hill_1979_Final_Nomination.pdf|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Elk Hill|author=Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission| date=March 1971|publisher=Virginia Department of Historic Resources}} and Accompanying photo 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.elkhill.org/about/mission-and-values/|title=Mission and Values - Elk Hill|work=elkhill.org|accessdate=22 January 2015}} 5. ^The website run by the Monticello Foundation indicates that this is not Jefferson's former property; the Elk Hill website, however, claims that it is. 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/elkhill|title=Elkhill|work=monticello.org|accessdate=22 January 2015}} 5 : Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Virginia|Greek Revival houses in Virginia|Houses completed in 1839|Houses in Goochland County, Virginia|National Register of Historic Places in Goochland County, Virginia |
