The site was formerly home to the Elmhurst gas tanks (officially the Newtown Holder Station), a pair of large natural gas storage gasometers that were {{convert|200|ft|m}} tall. The area is bordered on the south by 57th Avenue and the Long Island Expressway, on the north by Grand Avenue, on the west by the CSX-operated Fremont Secondary, and on the east by 80th Street.[1] The park is owned and operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.[2] Gas tanksBuilt between 1910 and 1921, the gas tanks were built to hold gas. Until the 1960s, the gas tanks had been maintained by an inspector using a rowboat. Due to the increasing prevalence of much more compact gas cylinders, Brooklyn Union Gas began dismantling the gas tanks in 1996.[1] Because the Long Island Expressway frequently became congested in that area, "backup at the Elmhurst Gas Tanks" became a familiar phrase in radio traffic reporting. Having been literal rather than legal landmarks, the two huge gas holders were completely removed by 2001.[3][4] ParkConstruction on the $20 million park, spearheaded by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, started in 2007.[5] On May 24, 2011, the Elmhurst Park was opened on the former site of the gas tanks.[2] The park contained state-of-the-art facilities including benches, lighting, lawns, and jogging paths, in addition to a playground and more than 620 trees.[2][6] The {{convert|6|acre|adj=on|spell=in}} park's bathrooms were delayed greatly, however. Having opened in September 2012,[7][8] the restroom facilities were stylish and spacious, although highly controversial; they drew wide criticism due to their $2.3 million cost.[9] A $2.85 million memorial to Vietnam War veterans, at the northeastern corner of Elmhurst Park, was announced in June 2017.[10] Although planning and fundraising started in the mid-2000s, construction started in December 2018, and the memorial would be finished in fall 2019.[11][12] The semicircular memorial will feature the names of 371 Queens residents who died while fighting in the war.[13] References1. ^1 {{cite news |title=A Large Something Seems to Be Missing |author=Kershaw, Sarah |url=https://www.nytimes.com/1996/09/01/nyregion/a-large-something-seems-to-be-missing.html |newspaper=The New York Times |date=September 1, 1996 |accessdate=December 12, 2013}} 2. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/elmhurstpark/ |title=Elmhurst Park : NYC Parks |publisher=Nycgovparks.org |date=May 24, 2011 |accessdate=December 12, 2013}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=Memory-Filled Tanks; Queens Loses 2 Roadside Landmarks |author=Hevesi, Dennis |url=https://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0CEFD7123CF933A1575AC0A965958260 |newspaper=The New York Times |date=September 20, 1993 |accessdate=March 24, 2008 |quote="The Elmhurst tanks — those 200-foot monoliths that stood sentinel to the changing landscape of Queens and as harbingers of hair-tearing delay on the highway to Manhattan — are down, deflated forever, their skeletal remains waiting to be dismantled."}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=Elmhurst gas tanks |url=http://www.queenstribune.com/guides/2006_Queens100/OurPast/index.htm |work=Queens Tribune |accessdate=June 4, 2007 |quote="But when the beloved landmarks weren’t really doing the business anymore they came down in 1996 and by 2001 there was almost no trace of the tanks that once supplied business and homes across the city." |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070608101457/http://queenstribune.com/guides/2006_Queens100/OurPast/index.htm |archivedate=June 8, 2007 |df= }} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.c0935b9a57bb4ef3daf2f1c701c789a0/index.jsp?pageID=mayor_press_release&catID=1194&doc_name=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fhtml%2Fom%2Fhtml%2F2011a%2Fpr191-11.html&cc=unused1978&rc=1194&ndi=1 |title=NYC.gov |publisher=NYC.gov |date= |accessdate=August 2, 2014}} 6. ^{{cite web|author=Katy |url=http://mommypoppins.com/newyorkcitykids/elmhurst-park-queens-gas-tank-park-nyc-kids |title=Destination Playground: Elmhurst Park in Queens - Brand-new Gas Tank Park in East Elmhurst Queens | Mommy Poppins - Things to Do in NYC with Kids |publisher=Mommy Poppins |date=August 1, 2011 |accessdate=August 2, 2014}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2012/10/04/exploring_elmhurst_park_six_acres_and_a_23_million_bathroom.php |title=Exploring Elmhurst Park, Six Acres And a $2.3 Million Bathroom - Camera Obscura - Curbed NY |publisher=Ny.curbed.com |date=October 4, 2012 |accessdate=August 2, 2014}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens/new-2-3-million-elmhurst-park-bathrooms-lots-style-room-article-1.1168173 |title=New $2.3 million Elmhurst Park bathrooms have lots of style and room |publisher=NY Daily News |date=September 26, 2012 |accessdate=August 2, 2014}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens/elmhurst-park-patrons-await-arrival-2-million-toilet-article-1.1024103 |title=After two years and $2.3 million, Queens park still awaits public toilet |publisher=NY Daily News |date=February 17, 2012 |accessdate=August 2, 2014}} 10. ^{{cite web | title=Elmhurst Park Vietnam memorial design unveiled | website=Queens Chronicle | date=June 12, 2017 | url=http://www.qchron.com/editions/central/elmhurst-park-vietnam-memorial-design-unveiled/article_644d7a3c-4f82-11e7-950f-efcd067d113b.html | access-date=December 4, 2018}} 11. ^{{cite web | last=Brand | first=David | title=Vietnam Veterans Memorial Finally Breaks Ground in Elmhurst Park | website=Queens Daily Eagle | date=November 28, 2018 | url=https://queenseagle.com/all/2018/11/28/vietnam-veterans-memorial-finally-breaks-ground-in-elmhurst-park | access-date=December 4, 2018}} 12. ^{{cite web | title=New Queens Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Elmhurst Park is a long time in coming | date=December 3, 2018 | website=TimesLedger | url=https://www.timesledger.com/stories/2018/49/vietnammemorial_2018_12_07_q.html | access-date=December 4, 2018}} 13. ^{{cite web | title='Dignified tribute' to Vietnam vets coming to Queens park | website=am New York | date=November 30, 2018 | url=https://www.amny.com/news/vietnam-veterans-memorial-queens-1.24072549 | access-date=December 4, 2018}} External links
