Captain Roald Amundsen and his South Pole party ascended Axel Heiberg Glacier near the central part of this group in November 1911, naming these mountains for the Norwegian queen Maud of Wales.[2] Despite the name, they are not located within Queen Maud Land. Elevations bordering the Beardmore Glacier, at the western extremity of these mountains, were observed by the British expeditions led by Ernest Shackleton (1907–09) and Robert Falcon Scott (1910-13), but the mountains as a whole were mapped by several American expeditions led by Richard Evelyn Byrd (1930s and 1940s), and United States Antarctic Program (USARP) and New Zealand Antarctic Research Program (NZARP) expeditions from the 1950s through the 1970s.[2] FeaturesGeographical features include: Barton Mountains{{main|Barton Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Barton Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Bush Mountains{{main|Bush Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Bush Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Commonwealth Range{{main|Commonwealth Range}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Commonwealth Range|features}}{{div col end}}Dominion Range{{main|Dominion Range}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Dominion Range|features}}{{div col end}}Gothic Mountains{{main|Gothic Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Gothic Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Grosvenor Mountains{{main|Grosvenor Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Grosvenor Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Hays Mountains{{main|Hays Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Hays Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Herbert Range{{main|Herbert Range}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Herbert Range|features}}{{div col end}}Hughes Range{{main|Hughes Range (Antarctica){{!}}Hughes Range}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Hughes Range (Antarctica)|features}}{{div col end}}La Gorce Mountains{{main|La Gorce Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:La Gorce Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Prince Olav Mountains{{main|Prince Olav Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Prince Olav Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Quarles Range{{main|Quarles Range}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Quarles Range|features}}{{div col end}}Rawson Mountains{{main|Rawson Mountains (Antarctica){{!}}Rawson Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Rawson Mountains (Antarctica)|features}}{{div col end}}Supporters Range{{main|Supporters Range}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Supporters Range|features}}{{div col end}}Tapley Mountains{{main|Tapley Mountains}}{{div col |colwidth=18em}}{{#section:Tapley Mountains|features}}{{div col end}}Other features{{div col |colwidth=18em}}
