In 2007, her computer science project won second prize in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, and she was awarded with the naming of an asteroid in her name. The main-belt asteroid, 23131 Debenedictis, was discovered on 5 January 2000 by the Lincoln Laboratory Near-Earth Asteroid Research Team in Socorro, New Mexico.[3] In 2008, she further became connected to asteroids when she attended the Summer Science Program, which teaches astronomy through a curriculum based on asteroid observations and orbital calculations.[4] At the program in Socorro, NM, just a short distance from where the asteroid was discovered, she had the opportunity to observe her namesake.[1] She enrolled at the California Institute of Technology in 2010.[6] References1. ^http://faculty.physics.tamu.edu/krisciunas/erika.html [2][3][4]2. ^1 {{cite web | url = http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=23131 | title = JPL Small-Body Database Browser | accessdate = 2010-03-17| publisher = NASA}} 3. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.nmt.edu/nmt-news/94-2008/3090-18july01g|title=A Day in the Life of SSP Students, July 18, 2008|date=July 18, 2008|first=Roger|last= Renteria|publisher=New Mexico Tech}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.hercampus.com/career/glamours-20-amazing-young-women-erika-debenedictis-winner-intel-s-science-talent-search|title=Glamour's 20 Amazing Young Women: Erika DeBenedictis, Winner of Intel’s Science Talent Search|website=Glamor|date=22 November 2010}} }} {{DEFAULTSORT:DeBenedictis, Erika Alden}} 3 : 1992 births|Living people|People from Albuquerque, New Mexico |
