词条 | Esther Clenott |
释义 |
Prior to serving in elected office, Clenott was a schoolteacher in the Portland Public Schools system. She taught Latin at Lincoln Middle School and Deering High School.[1] When Clenott was elected to the Portland city Council, she was one of the first women to win election to that body. On the council, Clenott strengthened Portland's relationship with Shinagawa, a sister city.[1] In May 2000, Clenott was ordered to pay $100,000 in damages after she was among Cumberland County officials named in a lawsuit by Moses Sebunya, who was president of the Maine NAACP at the time. Sebunya sued the county for alleged harassment after he lost job as county jail administrator after he gave a speech criticizing local officials about hate crimes.[2][3] References1. ^1 2 {{cite news|url=http://www.pressherald.com/2015/06/21/esther-clenott-former-portland-mayor-dies/|title=Esther Clenott, former Portland mayor, dies at 91|date=June 22, 2015|work=Portland Press Herald|accessdate=22 June 2015}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Clenott, Esther}}{{Maine-politician-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1914&dat=20000219&id=M80gAAAAIBAJ&sjid=p2oFAAAAIBAJ&pg=2821,3216475&hl=en|title=Jury: Officers retaliated against NAACP leader|date=February 19, 2000|work=Sun Journal|page=A3|accessdate=22 June 2015}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2457&dat=20000519&id=zqJJAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Xw0NAAAAIBAJ&pg=3065,1085370&hl=en|title=Settlement would pay man $450,000|date=May 19, 2000|work=Bangor Daily News|page=B4|accessdate=22 June 2015}} 9 : 1924 births|2015 deaths|Wellesley College alumni|Mayors of Portland, Maine|County Commissioners in Cumberland County, Maine|Women mayors of places in Maine|Maine Democrats|Educators from Maine|American schoolteachers |
