}}Faith Christian Academy (FCA) is a private K-12 Christian school in unincorporated Orange County, Florida near Orlando. It is to the southeast of the city. It currently has 672 students enrolled (PK-12).[1]

History

Faith Christian Academy was founded in 1979 as a ministry of Faith Assembly of God on its Goldenrod Campus. In 2012, along with Faith Assembly, FCA moved to its new, state of the art Curry Ford campus which has allowed significant growth since then due to the new and larger facility.

Allegations of racism

In 2013, after Vanessa Van Dyke, a 12-year-old African American student at the school, complained to staff at Faith Christian Academy of having been bullied by her classmates for having afro-textured hair, she was met with a threat of expulsion by school officials, who said her afro violated the school's dress code, even though the school's official handbook made no mention of a ban on afros. Also, Van Dyke had begun the school year wearing an afro and only faced disciplinary action for her hairstyle after she complained of being bullied by Caucasian students. Van Dyke's mother, Sabrina Kent, went to the media about the school's behavior towards her daughter and, in response to widespread backlash, the school rescinded its threat but did not issue a public apology. Even after being told she could remain at Faith Christian Academy without being made to change her hairstyle, one of the school's administrators, Pastor Carl Stevens, openly urged Van Dyke to "strongly consider the school's request that she cut or straighten her hair" as he believed her doing so would "resolve the issue." Van Dyke's story was featured by MSNBC, HuffPost, Miami New Times, and ClickOrlando.[2][3][4][5][6]

Athletics

Faith Christian Academy is a part of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) and competes in the 3A level.
