A division of SpartanNash, it has operated stores in Michigan since 1966, expanded into North Dakota in 2014, Nebraska in 2015, Iowa in 2016, and South Dakota in 2017. HistoryThe first Family Fare store opened in 1966 in Hudsonville, Michigan. It was founded by Don Koop and Ron Kunnen.[1] By the 1990s, the chain was owned by Spartan Stores (now SpartanNash), and had added locations in Holland, Byron Center, and Lowell.[2] In 2004, Spartan began consolidating most of its nameplates into two brands: Glen's Markets in northern lower Michigan, and Family Fare in southern lower Michigan. This change rebranded three locations of Prevo's Markets in Grand Rapids (which themselves had previously been known as Daane's) to Family Fare, as well as the Great Day chain, while the rest of the Prevo's became Glen's.[3][4] Spartan expanded Family Fare in 2007 when some locations of Felpausch were converted (mostly in the Battle Creek, Michigan area), with others becoming D&W Fresh Market instead.[5] Family Fare began expanding into northern Michigan in 2010 when a Glen's (formerly Ashcraft's) in Midland was converted.[6] Starting in 2013, Spartan converted more Glen's to Family Fare;[7] the conversions finished in 2014 with Frankfort and Sault Ste. Marie.[8] Other locations were rebranded from D&W Fresh Market around the same time, including Rockford and Grandville.[9][10] In November 2014, the first locations opened in the Fargo, North Dakota metropolitan area through conversions from Econofoods and Sunmart.[11] References1. ^{{cite journal|title=Firm conviction: Grocery chain sticks to conservative ways|journal=Sunday: The Magazine for the Lord's Day|publisher=Lord's Day Alliance of the U.S.|volume=77-82|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=afjeAAAAMAAJ&q=%22Family+fare%22+%22hudsonville%22&dq=%22Family+fare%22+%22hudsonville%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Q-bsVJLAC8nHsQTRo4HwDQ&ved=0CCQQ6AEwAQ}} {{SpartanNash}}{{Supermarkets of the United States}}{{US-retail-company-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|url=http://lowellnewspaper.iserv.net/The%20Grand%20Valley%20Ledger/1987/04_April/04-01-1987.pdf |title=Lowell grocery stores open, close, and change |work=The Grand Valley Ledger |page=1 |accessdate=25 February 2015 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150225061436/http://lowellnewspaper.iserv.net/The%20Grand%20Valley%20Ledger/1987/04_April/04-01-1987.pdf |archivedate=25 February 2015 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://archives.record-eagle.com/2004/mar/09prevo.htm|title=Prevo's to become Glen's Market|last=O'Brien|first=Bill|date=9 March 2004|work=Traverse City Record-Eagle|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2012/01/family_fare_supermarket_on_cas.html|title=Family Fare Supermarket on Cascade Road to close this weekend|last=Wilson|first=Rick|date=1 January 2012|work=mlive.com|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://supermarketnews.com/retail-amp-financial/spartan-convert-felpausch-dw-family-fare|title=Spartan to Convert Felpausch to D&W, Family Fare|date=6 August 2007|work=Supermarket News|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.ourmidland.com/news/article_0ef51313-96b9-5fdd-9989-c005f8512f41.html|title=Glen's Market to become Family Fare: Name change brings lower prices, new experience|last=Martin|first=Bryce|date=16 October 2010|work=Midland Daily News|accessdate=25 February 2015|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20101019030401/http://www.ourmidland.com/news/article_0ef51313-96b9-5fdd-9989-c005f8512f41.html|archivedate=19 October 2010|df=}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2013/05/spartan_stores_ceo_expected_to.html|title=Spartan Stores CEO expected to talk about plans to convert 13 Glen's Markets to Family Fare stores|last=Martinez|first=Shandra|date=23 May 2013|work=mlive.com|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2014/11/glens_market_disappears_as_las.html|title=Glen's Markets disappear as last stores convert to Family Fare Supermarkets|last=Martinez|first=Shandra|date=7 November 2014|work=mlive.com|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2010/08/grandville_dw_to_become_a_fami.html|title=Grandville D&W to become a Family Fare grocery store|last=Martinez|first=Shandra|date=26 August 2010|work=mlive.com|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 10. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2012/07/rockfords_dw_fresh_market_beco.html|title=Why Rockford's upscale D&W Fresh Market is being rebranded budget-friendly Family Fare|last=Martinez|first=Shandra|date=22 July 2012|work=Mlive.com|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2014/11/spartannash_expanding_family_f_1.html|title=SpartanNash expanding Family Fare stores beyond Michigan|last=Martinez|first=Shandra|date=1 November 2014|work=mlive.com|accessdate=25 February 2015}} 3 : 1966 establishments in Michigan|Companies based in Kent County, Michigan|Supermarkets of the United States |
