The town covers completely the area of the tambon Khao Niwet (เขานิเวศน์). As of 2005, it had a population of 16,163. Ranong lies {{convert|586|km}} south-southwest of Bangkok by road. GeographyRanong is on the estuary of the Pak Chan (or Kraburi) River, opposite Myanmar's Kawthaung (formerly Victoria Point). The Tenasserim Hills rise directly to the east of Ranong, and another small ridge runs along the edge of the estuary to the town's north. ClimateRanong has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen climate classification Am). There is little variation in the temperature throughout the year, although the pre-monsoon months (February to April) are somewhat hotter in the day. However, Ranong's position to the west of the Tenasserim Hills means that the monsoon season's rains are greatly amplified, resulting in torrential rains from May until October, and significant rainfall in the transition months of April and November. {{Weather box|width=auto|location = Ranong (1981–2010) |metric first = Yes |single line = Yes |Jan record high C = 36.4 |Feb record high C = 38.3 |Mar record high C = 39.6 |Apr record high C = 39.1 |May record high C = 38.7 |Jun record high C = 35.3 |Jul record high C = 34.8 |Aug record high C = 34.0 |Sep record high C = 34.5 |Oct record high C = 35.2 |Nov record high C = 35.4 |Dec record high C = 35.0 |year record high C = 39.6 |Jan high C = 32.8 |Feb high C = 34.1 |Mar high C = 35.0 |Apr high C = 34.6 |May high C = 32.4 |Jun high C = 31.2 |Jul high C = 30.8 |Aug high C = 30.5 |Sep high C = 30.5 |Oct high C = 31.0 |Nov high C = 31.4 |Dec high C = 31.7 |year high C = 32.2 |Jan mean C = 26.7 |Feb mean C = 27.5 |Mar mean C = 28.4 |Apr mean C = 28.8 |May mean C = 27.7 |Jun mean C = 27.3 |Jul mean C = 26.9 |Aug mean C = 26.8 |Sep mean C = 26.4 |Oct mean C = 26.4 |Nov mean C = 26.5 |Dec mean C = 26.3 |year mean C = 27.1 |Jan low C = 21.9 |Feb low C = 22.2 |Mar low C = 23.4 |Apr low C = 24.6 |May low C = 24.7 |Jun low C = 24.5 |Jul low C = 24.3 |Aug low C = 24.2 |Sep low C = 23.9 |Oct low C = 23.6 |Nov low C = 23.3 |Dec low C = 22.4 |year low C = 23.6 |Jan record low C = 16.5 |Feb record low C = 16.1 |Mar record low C = 18.5 |Apr record low C = 19.8 |May record low C = 22.3 |Jun record low C = 21.8 |Jul record low C = 21.4 |Aug record low C = 21.6 |Sep record low C = 21.4 |Oct record low C = 20.2 |Nov record low C = 19.3 |Dec record low C = 16.5 |year record low C = 16.1 |rain colour = green |Jan rain mm = 10.0 |Feb rain mm = 16.0 |Mar rain mm = 65.2 |Apr rain mm = 152.6 |May rain mm = 496.6 |Jun rain mm = 649.4 |Jul rain mm = 620.7 |Aug rain mm = 789.1 |Sep rain mm = 646.5 |Oct rain mm = 424.5 |Nov rain mm = 151.3 |Dec rain mm = 45.5 |year rain mm = 4068.4 |Jan rain days = 3.3 |Feb rain days = 3.5 |Mar rain days = 6.5 |Apr rain days = 11.8 |May rain days = 23.8 |Jun rain days = 24.4 |Jul rain days = 25.5 |Aug rain days = 27.4 |Sep rain days = 25.2 |Oct rain days = 23.8 |Nov rain days = 14.5 |Dec rain days = 5.8 |year rain days = 195.5 |Jan humidity = 72 |Feb humidity = 70 |Mar humidity = 71 |Apr humidity = 76 |May humidity = 83 |Jun humidity = 84 |Jul humidity = 85 |Aug humidity = 86 |Sep humidity = 86 |Oct humidity = 85 |Nov humidity = 80 |Dec humidity = 75 |year humidity = 79 |Jan sun = 232.5 |Feb sun = 214.7 |Mar sun = 201.5 |Apr sun = 183.0 |May sun = 155.0 |Jun sun = 114.0 |Jul sun = 114.7 |Aug sun = 114.7 |Sep sun = 108.0 |Oct sun = 145.7 |Nov sun = 174.0 |Dec sun = 195.3 |year sun = |Jand sun = 7.5 |Febd sun = 7.6 |Mard sun = 6.5 |Aprd sun = 6.1 |Mayd sun = 5.0 |Jund sun = 3.8 |Juld sun = 3.7 |Augd sun = 3.7 |Sepd sun = 3.6 |Octd sun = 4.7 |Novd sun = 5.8 |Decd sun = 6.3 |yeard sun = 5.4 |source 1 = Thai Meteorological Department[1] |source 2 = Office of Water Management and Hydrology, Royal Irrigation Department (sun and humidity)[2] }} TransportationPhet Kasem Road (Thailand Route 4) runs through the city.
