HistoryFeatherdale is located on seven acres of land owned by Charles and Marjorie Wigg, which they purchased in 1953, in what was then a poultry farm.[2] It was opened in 1972, by their son in-law Bruce Kibbare, who had studied fauna. The park initially opened as a nursery, lined with Australian native trees and plants, in conjunction with a wildlife park. It was threatened with closure in 1975 by rezoning and development for public housing, but the decision was reversed by then premier Sir Robert Askin.[2] The park is owned currently by the Elanor Investment Group, who own several destinations in the tourism and leisure sector. The faculty is equipped with an amphitheatre and runs a program called "The Learning Burrow", encouraging education and general information on animals. Featherdale won the best Major Tourist Attraction award in 2005 and 2009.[3] Many well known celebrities have visited Featherdale, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Gwen Stefani, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, Dave Grohl and Smokey Robinson.[4][5] References{{Commons category}}1. ^{{cite web|url=http://travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/australia-and-pacific/australia/sydney/21054/featherdale-wildlife-park/attraction-detail.html |title=Sydney Attractions: Featherdale Wildlife Park |work=New York Times website |author= Frommer's Australia 2011 |date=2012|accessdate=18 March 2012}} {{Sydney landmarks}}{{Zoos of New South Wales}}{{NewSouthWales-struct-stub}}{{zoo-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.featherdale.com.au/ParkInfo.aspx|title=About Featherdale Wildlife Park|date=2012|work=Featherdale Wildlife Park website|publisher=self|accessdate=19 March 2012}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://blacktown-advocate.whereilive.com.au/lifestyle/story/featherdale-beats-opera-house-to-claim-major-tourism-award/ | title=Featherdale beats Opera House to claim major tourism award |date= 23 November 2009 | author=O'Maley, Christine |work=Blacktown Advocate|accessdate=18 March 2012}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/sydney-confidential/blake-lively-and-leonardo-dicaprio-have-an-animal-attraction-at-featherdale-wildlife-park/story-e6frewz0-1226125849268 | title=Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio have an animal attraction at Featherdale Wildlife Park |date=31 August 2011|work=The Daily Telegraph|publisher=News Ltd.|author=Sharp, Annette |accessdate=18 March 2012}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sydney-nsw/gwen-opens-up-in-sydney/story-e6freuzi-1111114080924 | title=Gwen opens up in Sydney |author=McCabe, Kathy |date= 1 August 2007 |work=The Daily Telegraph|publisher=News Ltd.|accessdate=18 March 2012}} 3 : Parks in New South Wales|Zoos in New South Wales|Tourist attractions in Sydney |
