It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation as well as the South African Territorial Reserve. HistoryOriginThis commando can trace its origin to the Free State - Basotho Wars of 1858 -1868. OperationsWith the Orange Free State RepublicDuring the Anglo Boer WarThe commando was again involved in the Anglo Boer War most notable being:
SurrenderOn the morning of 30 July 1900, General Hunter received the surrender of Commandants Prinsloo and Crowther of the Ficksburg and Ladybrand commandos. The surrender took place on what would become known as 'Surrender Hill in the Brandwater Basin.[2][3] With the UDFBy 1902 all Commando remnants were under British military control and disarmed. By 1912, however previous Commando members could join shooting associations. By 1940, such commandos were under control of the National Reserve of Volunteers. These commandos were formally reactivated by 1948. With the SADFThis commando was primarily used in this era for area force protection, border operations and stock theft control. With the SANDFDisbandmentThis unit, along with all other Commando units was disbanded after a decision by South African President Thabo Mbeki to disband all Commando Units.[4][5] The Commando system was phased out between 2003 and 2008 "because of the role it played in the apartheid era", according to the Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula.[6] Unit InsigniaLeadership{{Post-start|caption=Leadership|float=}}{{Post-header|post-name=Honorary Colonels}}{{Post-header|post-name=Commanding Officers}}{{Post-member|from-date=1900|post-incumbent=Commandant Paul de Villiers|to-date=nd}}{{Post-header|post-name=Regimental Sergeants Major}}{{Post-end}}References1. ^http://www.biddulphsberg.com/anglo-boer-war-bull-anglo-boere-oorlog.html 2. ^Amery, L S (ed), The Times History of the War in South Africa, 1899-1902, (London, 1909). 3. ^The South African War Record of the 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 1900-1902, (Inverness, 1903). 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.issafrica.org/Pubs/ASR/6No2/VanStade.html |title=Rationalisation in the SANDF: The Next Challenge |accessdate=5 March 2015 |year=1997 |author=Col L B van Stade, Senior Staff Officer Rationalisation, SANDF |publisher=Institute for Security Studies |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160316204323/https://issafrica.org/pubs/asr/6no2/vanstade.html |archivedate=16 March 2016 |df= }} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.saps.gov.za/statistics/reports/rural_safety/eng/pages/no2e.htm |title=About the Commando system |accessdate=2008-01-17 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20071206150052/http://www.saps.gov.za/statistics/reports/rural_safety/eng/pages/no2e.htm |archivedate=2007-12-06 |df= }} 6. ^{{cite web|last1=de Lange|first1=Deon|title=South Africa: Commandos Were 'Hostile to New SA'|url=http://allafrica.com/stories/200805290408.html|work=Cape Argus|accessdate=5 March 2015|subscription=yes}} See also
