Rayman M (released in North America as Rayman Arena) is a multiplayer party game developed and published by Ubisoft. The game encompasses two versions: the original international release for the PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows, and the North American-exclusive Nintendo Gamecube and Xbox versions, which feature extra content. A spin-off in the Rayman series, the game retains a number of elements that previously appeared in The Great Escape, such as similar controls, gameplay and level design. The game is split two game modes, both supporting up to four players: on-foot racing and arena-based battles.

The PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows versions require the player to complete five leagues (Beginner, Advanced, Expert, Extreme and Bonus) to beat the game.

The GameCube and Xbox versions require the player to complete the game on the three separate difficulties (Beginner, Pro and Master) to beat the game.

Versions

PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows

Rayman M had been released in Europe in 2001 for the PlayStation 2 and PC, and was released in North America for the PlayStation 2 and PC in 2002 under the name Rayman Arena. There are very minor changes between the two versions (intro movie, load screens, etc.). The game's name was changed to avoid the M possibly being mistaken for the ESRB's M for Mature rating. On May 29, 2012, the PlayStation 2 version of Rayman Arena became a PlayStation 2 Classic on the North American (Canadian and American) PlayStation Store for $9.99 (CAD/USD).

Nintendo GameCube and Xbox

Rayman M was originally planned for a November 2001 release for GameCube and Xbox, but both systems were not released in Europe until early 2002. Ubisoft then decided to make a separate version of the game for the GameCube and Xbox for the North American audience, featuring a number of changes, including:

  • A new main menu.
  • A new intro and a new outro.
  • New cutscenes where Murfy explains the basics to the different game types.
  • Difficulty levels in the single-player mode (Beginner, Pro and Master)
  • Modified level designs for some levels.
  • A new playable character (Dark Globox) and new unlockable skins (such as Dark Rayman).
  • A new game mode (Time Attack).
  • A new Race Exhibition level (Extreme Slide)
  • Three new Battle Exhibition levels (Pac-Arena, Low Gravity Arena and Kuraï)
  • Born to Slide and Speed Stress renamed to Speed Stress and Run, Run respectively.
  • Race, Lum Spring and Lum Fight renamed to Obstacle Racing, Freeze Combat and Total Fight respectively.
  • The removal of five game modes (Training, Popolopoï, Lums, Kill Time and Capture the Fly)
  • The removal of two Bonus League race levels (Big Bang and On and On)
  • Modified character themes for Globox and Tily for all race levels.
  • New character themes for every character in the Factory race levels.

Rayman Rush is an on-foot racing game developed by Ubi Soft Shanghai and published by Ubi Soft, based on the Rayman universe. The game is a remake of Rayman M for the PlayStation, but only features the racing half of the game. The Teensies were replaced with a new character (Globette), sports conversions of twelve race tracks (the level Treasure Ship was removed and replaced with Canopy, a remake of the level Big Bang from the PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows releases) and a slightly edited introduction movie. The game supports up to two players, due to the technical limitations of the ageing PlayStation hardware.

Game modes

There are 5 game modes (only Championship Mode has multiplayer support):

  • Championship Mode: The player competes with a computer-controlled character (or a second human player if multiplayer is on), to finish 3 laps before the opponent to win. One victory in Championship Mode unlocks Lums Mode for the same track. With multiplayer, the screen is divided vertically. Player 1 is represented by yellow while player 2 or the computer is represented by blue.
  • Lums Mode: Only available once the corresponding level has been unlocked in Championship Mode. In this mode, many Yellow Lums are spread around the maps, which the player must compete with a computer-controlled character and win the 3-lap race. At the same time, collect as many Lums as possible. If the challenging player wins, the corresponding level will be unlocked in the Target Mode, Depending on the number of Lums collected, a time bonus for Target Mode will be awarded.
  • Target Mode: Only available once the corresponding level has been unlocked in Lums Mode, a single player will race alone against the clock, shooting at butterflies that are spread around the level. Each butterfly shot gives extra time.
  • Time Attack Mode: A single player will run one lap on their own. The aim is to reach the next checkpoint before the timer reaches 0.
  • Training Mode: This mode serves only as a means of familiarizing new players with the tracks, allowing them to practice and master the game controls and tricks before a real challenge.
