Three stones mark the main chamber, which has been dramatically reduced; a second less well-preserved chamber is to the west. Access can be had on foot via a permitted path from Pillwell Gate to the west.[2] The mound was excavated by Thomas Bateman in 1846.[3] Notes1. ^{{National Heritage List for England |num=1008940|desc=Five Wells chambered tomb|accessdate=15 February 2014}} {{European Standing Stones|state=collapsed}}{{Derbyshire-struct-stub}}{{UK-cemetery-stub}}2. ^{{cite book|author=Julian Cope|title=The Modern Antiquarian: A Pre-millennial Odyssey Through Megalithic Britain : Including a Gazetteer to Over 300 Prehistoric Sites|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=PbNgQgAACAAJ|accessdate=11 April 2013|year=1998|page=249|publisher=Thorsons Pub|isbn=978-0-7225-3599-8}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=75 |title=Five Wells |publisher=The Megalithic Portal |accessdate=15 February 2014}} 6 : Megalithic monuments in England|Stone Age sites in England|Archaeological sites in Derbyshire|Buildings and structures in Derbyshire|Tourist attractions in Derbyshire|Scheduled Ancient Monuments in Derbyshire |
