Fort Branch was built in 1862 and improved in mid- to late 1864. It sits 70 feet above a bend in the Roanoke River, and the Confederate States Army earthen fort provided a safe and clear view of Union gunboats approaching from down river. The fort site has undergone restoration by the Fort Branch Battlefield Commission, Inc.[2][3] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.[1] References1. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{National Register of Historic Places in North Carolina}}{{MartinCountyNC-NRHP-stub}}2. ^{{Cite web | author =unknown | title =Fort Branch Site| work = National Register of Historic Places - Nomination and Inventory | date =n.d.| url = http://www.hpo.ncdcr.gov/nr/MT0005.pdf | format = pdf | publisher = North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office | accessdate = 2015-02-01}} 3. ^Fort Branch Civil War Site, Hamilton, NC 4 : American Civil War forts|Archaeological sites on the National Register of Historic Places in North Carolina|Buildings and structures in Martin County, North Carolina|National Register of Historic Places in Martin County, North Carolina |
