It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.[1] The fort was built in 1861 by Confederate army troops under General Simon Bolivar Buckner at the peak of Vinegar Hill and was named Fort Vinegar. It was renamed for William Haines Lytle after his 1863 death leading a cavalry charge in the Battle of Chickamauga. The hill was later called College Hill. It was later improved by the Union army under Colonel Benjamin Harrison.[2] References1. ^1 {{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{National Register of Historic Places}}{{Kentucky-NRHP-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url={{NRHP url|id=84000848}}|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: Fort Lytle / College Hill;state survey no.:WA-B-226 |publisher=National Park Service|author= |date= |accessdate=January 13, 2018}} With {{NRHP url|id=84000848|photos=y|title=11 photos from 1984}}. 4 : National Register of Historic Places in Kentucky|Military installations established in 1861|Warren County, Kentucky|American Civil War forts |
