Whitehair Bridge, also known as the Crows Bluff Bridge, is a double leaf bascule bridge located in Crows Bluff, Florida that carries State Road 44 over the St. Johns River. The original bridge on the site was constructed in 1917; replaced in 1955, it is expected to remain in service until the 2050s.[1] HistoryThe original Crows Bluff Bridge was a swing span bridge; constructed in 1917,[2] in 1926 it became a free crossing.[3] In 1954, a plan for construction of a replacement bridge was established;[4] the new bridge, dedicated to DeLand resident Francis P. Whitehair, opened on September 22, 1955.[5] In the late 1980s and early 1990s the bridge was closed several times for repairs.[6][7][8] A 1993 truck accident damaged the bridge, requiring repairs to its guardrails.[9] In 2006 a truck caused damage to the bridge's support beams in another accident;[10] the damage was repaired within a week.[11] References1. ^{{cite news|url=http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=NJ&p_theme=nj&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=106F04270E22A05B&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM|title=Where two paths converge|last=Williamson|first=Ronald|date=December 11, 2004|work=The Daytona Beach News-Journal|page=1C|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Daytona Beach, FL}} 2. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1873&dat=19670917&id=a24eAAAAIBAJ&sjid=mskEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4056,3042846|title=Old span|date=September 17, 1967|work=Daytona Beach Morning Journal|page=9A|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Daytona Beach, FL}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=WMxPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=flQDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4531,5865054&dq=astor-bridge&hl=en|title=Two Volusia-Lake County Bridges Scheduled to Be Free of Charge|date=May 29, 1926|work=Evening Independent|page=12A|location=St. Petersburg, FL|accessdate=2012-09-02}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=DYceAAAAIBAJ&sjid=nMsEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3210,427674&dq=crows-bluff-bridge&hl=en|title=Bids Asked On Bridge|date=March 21, 1954|work=The Sunday News-Journal|page=1|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Daytona Beach, FL}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=E4oeAAAAIBAJ&sjid=fcsEAAAAIBAJ&pg=653,2897017&dq=whitehair-bridge&hl=en|title=2 Counties Joined By New Span|last=Paulson|first=Morton|date=September 23, 1955|work=Daytona Beach Morning Journal|page=1|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Daytona Beach, FL}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=https://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/orlandosentinel/access/89246778.html?dids=89246778:89246778&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&type=current&date=Nov+02%2C+1988&author=&pub=Orlando+Sentinel&desc=BRIDGE+REPAIRS+HALT+MORNING+TRAFFIC&pqatl=google|title=Bridge repairs halt morning traffic|date=November 2, 1988|work=Orlando Sentinel|page=3|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Orlando, FL}} 7. ^{{cite news|url=https://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/orlandosentinel/access/90294486.html?dids=90294486:90294486&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&type=current&date=Oct+18%2C+1990&author=&pub=Orlando+Sentinel&desc=ELECTRICAL+BRIDGE+FAILS%2C+FORCES+20-MILE+DETOURS&pqatl=google|title=Electrical bridge fails; forces 20-mile detours|date=October 18, 1990|work=Orlando Sentinel|page=B3|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Orlando, FL}} 8. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=soMgAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Q9MEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2179,8965584&dq=whitehair-bridge&hl=en|title=Whitehair Bridge closing temporarily for repairs|date=October 31, 1991|work=The Daytona Beach News-Journal|page=5C|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Daytona Beach, FL}} 9. ^{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=aw0qAAAAIBAJ&sjid=09MEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2427,5700921&dq=whitehair-bridge&hl=en|title=Bridge damaged when trucks collide|date=July 13, 1993|work=The Daytona Beach News-Journal|page=2B|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Daytona Beach, FL}} 10. ^{{cite news|url=http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=NJ&p_theme=nj&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=110AEB6E816D47B8&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM|title=Truck rams bridge, shuts S.R. 44 lane|last=Kiesler|first=Sara|date=March 29, 2006|work=The Daytona Beach News-Journal|page=1C|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Daytona Beach, FL}} 11. ^{{cite web|url=http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2006-03-31/news/VBRIEFS0331_9_1_deland-bridge-reopen|title=Whitehair Bridge lanes reopen|date=March 31, 2006|work=Orlando Sentinel|accessdate=2012-09-06|location=Orlando, FL}} External links{{commons category|Crows Bluff Bridge}}
