释义 |
Her broadcasting career started in 1978, first as a television news reporter for BCTV in Vancouver, British Columbia, and then as a producer and news anchor.[2][4] Smith moved to Toronto, Ontario, and joined CFTO in February 1982 as a television news reporter.[2][4] Her career advancement at CFTO occurred at a time when the television news networks in Toronto competed to hire women as news anchors and attract larger audiences.[5][6] On September 4, 1982, Smith became the first female weekend news anchor at CFTO.[3][4][7] After the television ratings for the weekend news program climbed 55 per cent,[3] she became the station's first female late night news anchor on Night Beat News the following year.[4] On August 20, 1984, she was paired with Tom Gibney to co-anchor the early evening news program, World Beat News, the station's top-ranked newscast at the time.[8][9] After a decade-long career in television news which included six years in Toronto, Smith resigned from CFTO. After an absence of nearly five years, Smith returned to television briefly as an afternoon news anchor for CKVR in Barrie, Ontario, on March 3, 1993.[10] References1. ^{{cite news|title=Friends, Beagles, Countrymen ...|work=Globe and Mail|date=27 March 1986|ref=1|page=E11}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Smith, Gail}}2. ^1 2 {{cite news|last1=Zyvatkauskas|first1=Betty|title=More than just a TV face that reads|work=Globe and Mail|date=27 November 1982|ref=2|page=A101}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite news|last1=Smith|first1=Diane|title=Grace under pressure|work=Toronto Star|issue=Starweek Magazine|date=28 May 1983|ref=3|page=63}} 4. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news|last1=Hume|first1=Christopher|title=Clearing the air|work=Toronto Star|issue=Starweek Magazine|date=19 November 1988|ref=4|page=6}} 5. ^{{cite news|last1=McLean|first1=Ross|title=Anchorwomen have looks and smarts but will they stand the test of time?|work=Globe and Mail|date=3 September 1983|ref=5|page=D10}} 6. ^{{cite news|last1=Taylor|first1=Bill|title=News Wars|work=Toronto Star|issue=Starweek Magazine|date=2 March 1985|ref=6|pages=4, 6}} 7. ^{{cite news|last1=Adilman|first1=Sid|title=TV blurbs|work=Toronto Star|date=26 August 1982|ref=7|page=E6}} 8. ^{{cite news|last1=Bawden|first1=Jim|title=More news on local news overhauls|work=Toronto Star|date=3 August 1984|ref=8|page=C1}} 9. ^{{cite web|last1=Dulmage|first1=Bill|title=Television Station History: Ontario, Toronto and Vicinity, CFTO-DT, Toronto, Bell Media|url=http://www.broadcasting-history.ca/index3.html?url=http%3A//www.broadcasting-history.ca/listings_and_histories/television/histories.php%3Fid%3D4%26historyID%3D15|website=Broadcasting-history.ca|publisher=Canadian Communications Foundation|accessdate=28 February 2015|ref=9|archivedate=November 2013}} 10. ^{{cite news|last1=Quill|first1=Greg|title=Teens talking to Street Cents|work=Toronto Star|date=28 February 1993|ref=16|page=C6}} 8 : Canadian television news anchors|Canadian television reporters and correspondents|Canadian women television journalists|1955 births|Living people|University of Western Ontario alumni|Carleton University alumni|People from Quinte West |
