Gambaga was the first administrative capital of the then Northern Territory, Its main economics are agriculture, quarrying and trade. Once a residence of Mamprusi-kings it is still the capital of East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly, a municipality in the Northern Region of Ghana.[2] It is home to several ancient Mossi chiefs' gravsites.Gambaga has no district hospital, bank, GPRTU Station etcetera Gambaga was the capital of the Northern Territory during colonial era but lost it to Tamale. Perennial water shortages is the main challenge for residents of Gambaga. Nalerigu is the economic hub of the East Mamprusi District and regional capital of the North East Region of Ghana.
