词条 | George Cooke (Australian politician) |
释义 |
Cooke was born in Toowoomba, the son of a farmer. He was a sheep and cattle farmer and at other times a labourer and contractor for many years. He joined the Labor Party when it was first established in Queensland. He bought a home at Gilles Plains in South Australia around 1908. Having studied fruitgrowing at the Adelaide School of Mines, he established his own orchard, specialising in peaches.[2][3] He supported the White Australia Policy and opposed conscription in World War I.[2] He retired from politics at the 1933 election.[4] He died in 1938, having suffered "creeping paralysis" that made him "virtually an invalid" for several years prior to his death.[5] References1. ^George Cooke: SA Parliament {{DEFAULTSORT:Cooke, George}}{{Australia-Labor-politician-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article105456717 |title=THE 'CLEAN-UP' CANDIDATES |newspaper=Daily Herald |volume=8 |issue=2476 |location=South Australia |date=26 February 1918 |accessdate=29 September 2017 |page=6 |via=National Library of Australia}} 3. ^{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article107247393 |title=WONDERFUL PEACHES. |newspaper=Daily Herald |volume=XI |issue=3372 |location=South Australia |date=8 January 1921 |accessdate=29 September 2017 |page=8 |via=National Library of Australia}} 4. ^{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article129274696 |title=STATE ELECTIONS ELEVEN IN KEEN FIGHT FOR BAROSSA SEATS |newspaper=The News |volume=XX |issue=3,022 |location=Adelaide |date=25 March 1933 |accessdate=29 September 2017 |page=5 |via=National Library of Australia}} 5. ^{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article96687385 |title=OBITUARY. |newspaper=Bunyip |issue=4,608 |location=South Australia |date=1 April 1938 |accessdate=29 September 2017 |page=10 |via=National Library of Australia}} 4 : 1869 births|1938 deaths|Australian Labor Party members of the Parliament of South Australia|Members of the South Australian House of Assembly |
