释义 |
Under the Roman Empire, Gerenia was the most northerly of the Eleuthero-Laconian towns, and was situated on the eastern side of the Messenian Gulf, upon a mountainous promontory. Pausanias says that in the district of Gerenia there was a mountain called Calathium, upon which there was a sanctuary of Claea (an Oread), and close to the latter a cavern, of which the entrance was narrow, though within there were many things worthy to be seen.[6] Its site is located near the modern Zarnata.[7][8] Two very ancient inscriptions discovered at Gerenia are published by August Böckh.[9] References1. ^1 {{Cite Pausanias|3|26|9}} {{DGRG|title=Gerenia}}{{coord|36.934|N|22.195|E|format=dms|display=title|source:http://dare.ht.lu.se/places/27436}}{{AncientGreece-stub}}{{Greece-geo-stub}}2. ^{{Cite Stephanus|s.v.}} 3. ^1 {{Cite Strabo|viii. p.360}} 4. ^Hes.
