Germantown High School (abbreviated GHS or just as Germantown), is an American public school in Gluckstadt, Mississippi, United States. It is a high school that is managed by the Madison County School District.

History

The school's name Germantown comes from the history of German settlement in Gluckstadt, Mississippi, the community that it was built in.

Germantown High School is one of five public high schools in Madison County, Mississippi.[1] The school was launched in August 2011 as part of the Madison County School District, one of the fastest-growing school districts in the state of Mississippi.[2]

Student life

The school offers a college-preparatory curriculum and includes teams for 18 varsity sports, varsity band and dance programs, and more than 20 school clubs.[2] The school maintains a partnership with Holmes Community College in Goodman, Mississippi allowing academically-qualified Seniors to participate in a dual enrollment program, spending part of their day on each campus and taking college-level courses.[2]

Demographics

During the 2015-16 school year, approximately 1,038 students were enrolled at Germantown High School.[2]

Non-European-American enrollment at the school is approximately 37%, in contrast to Mississippi's about 55% African-American majority of school-age children.[1] This represents a very similar racial distribution to other schools in the city of Madison.[3] Approximately 48% of the GHS student body is female, 52% male — numbers which differ only slightly from the statewide average of 49% female, 51% male.[3]

Extracurricular activities

Team sports

Germantown High School, with its teams named the "Mavericks," maintains 18 varsity sports.[2] These include football, baseball, golf, soccer, track and field, cross-country, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and bowling.[4] The school also has programs in the less-common high school sports of powerlifting and team dance.[4]

Band

Rivalries

Battle of South Madison County

The Germantown Mavericks and Ridgeland Titans isn't a fan favorite rivalry because of all the blowouts in this young rivalry. Germantown 4-1 in this rivalry with the first game being an eventful overtime loss, this would be the only win in the series for Ridgeland.

Northwest Rankin vs. Germantown

Like the Ridgeland rivalry, this is not a fan favorite rivalry because of all the blowouts. Germantown are 0-4 in this rivalry with the fewest points ever lost was 16 points against the 6a juggernaut. Since their first loss, the most points Germantown would ever score is a touchdown. In 2016 the score was 0-24. 2015 when Germantown's student section came to the games in trash bags to call NWRHS trash. In the 2018 game in a bitter loss to them on home field a fight broke out between the two teams after the game was finished.
