Prior to World War I, the first public water system was established in the then Gold coast by the British who were then colonizing the Gold Coast. In by that time the 1920s, other major towns and cities started having water systems which were built purposely to be used in some urban areas, including Winneba, Kumasi, and the then colonial capital Cape Coast. Ghana Water Company Limited was established on 1 July 1999, following the conversion of Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation into a state-owned limited liability company under the Statutory Corporations (Conversion to Companies) Act 461 of 1993 as amended by LI 1648.[5] Locations and operationsGWCL has offices and stations across Ghana including regional and district offices which oversee the provision of potable water in their respective geographic locations and has its head Office in Accra.[6][7] References1. ^{{Cite web|title = Trouble brews in Ghana Water Company Limited|url = http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=334510|website = www.ghanaweb.com|accessdate = 2015-04-22}} 2. ^{{Cite web|title = Ghana News - Ghana Water Company MD resigns|url = http://www.myjoyonline.com/news/2014/December-4th/ghana-water-company-md-resigns.php|website = www.myjoyonline.com|accessdate = 2015-04-22|first = Nathan|last = Gadugah}} 3. ^{{Cite news|title = Ghana's daily struggle for water|url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7761588.stm|newspaper = BBC|date = 2008-12-03|access-date = 2015-04-23}} 4. ^{{Cite web|title = Aqua Vitens hands over operations back to Ghana Water Company {{!}} PSI|url = http://www.world-psi.org/en/aqua-vitens-hands-over-operations-back-ghana-water-company|website = www.world-psi.org|accessdate = 2015-04-23}} 5. ^{{Cite web|title = GHANA WATER COMPANY LIMITED - GWCL|url = http://www.gwcl.com.gh/pgs/history.php|website = www.gwcl.com.gh|accessdate = 2015-04-22|deadurl = yes|archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20150506101950/http://www.gwcl.com.gh/pgs/history.php|archivedate = 6 May 2015|df = dmy-all}} 6. ^{{Cite web|title=Fire Guts Water Company Quarters Kills 4-Year-Old Boy – Daily Guide |url=http://www.dailyguideghana.com/fire-guts-water-company-quarters-kills-4-year-old-boy/ |archive-url=https://archive.is/20150423084108/http://www.dailyguideghana.com/fire-guts-water-company-quarters-kills-4-year-old-boy/ |dead-url=yes |archive-date=2015-04-23 |website=www.dailyguideghana.com |accessdate=2015-04-23 }} 7. ^{{Cite web|title = GHANA WATER COMPANY LIMITED - GWCL|url = http://www.gwcl.com.gh/pgs/locations.php|website = www.gwcl.com.gh|accessdate = 2015-04-23}} External linksGWCL WebsiteWater supply and sanitation in Ghana 1 : Water supply and sanitation in Ghana |
