It has a visual magnitude of 11.8 and an absolute magnitude of 10.9.[2] Other stellar catalog names for it include HIP 19394 and LHS 188. Planetary systemIn September 2012, astronomers using the HARPS instrument announced the discovery of two planets orbiting Gliese 163.[3][4] One planet, Gliese 163 c, with an orbital period of 26 days, and a minimum mass of 7.2 Earth masses, was considered potentially in the habitable zone, although hotter than Earth. A second planet, Gliese 163 b, was also announced, with a period of 1 day. It would be too hot to be considered habitable. Evidence was also found for a third planet orbiting further out than c and b.[3][4] In June 2013, it was concluded that at least 3 planets orbit around the star with fourth planet being a possibility.[5] {{Orbitbox planet begin| name = Gliese 163 | table_ref = [6][7][8][16] | period_unit = day }}{{Orbitbox planet | exoplanet = b | mass = 0.0334 ± 0.0019 | semimajor = 0.06069 ± 0.0001 | period = 8.633 ± 0.00155 | eccentricity = 0.0106 ± 0.05 }}{{Orbitbox planet | exoplanet = e | mass = 0.012 | semimajor = 0.10 | period = 19.46 ± 0.02 | eccentricity = 0.32 ± 0.17 }}{{Orbitbox planet | exoplanet = c | mass_earth = 6.8 | semimajor = 0.1254 ± 0.0001 | period = 25.645 ± 0.0235 | eccentricity = 0.094 ± 86[9] }}{{Orbitbox planet | exoplanet = f | mass = 0.023 | semimajor = 0.33 | period = 108.4 ± 0.5 | eccentricity = 0.41 ± 0.15 }}{{Orbitbox planet | exoplanet = d | mass = 0.06945 ± 0.0092 | semimajor = 1.02689 ± 0.0086 | period = 600.895 ± 7.56 | eccentricity = 0.399 ± 0.077 }}{{Orbitbox end}} Notes1. ^1 2 3 https://arxiv.org/pdf/1306.1717.pdf 2. ^1 {{cite web |author=Staff |title=LHS 188 -- High proper-motion Star |url=http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/sim-id?Ident=HIP+19394 |date=September 20, 2012 |publisher=Centre de données astronomiques de Strasbourg (Strasbourg astronomical Data Center) |accessdate=September 20, 2012 }} 3. ^1 {{cite web |last=Méndez |first=Abel |title=A Hot Potential Habitable Exoplanet around Gliese 163 |url=http://phl.upr.edu/press-releases/ahotpotentialhabitableexoplanetaroundgliese163 |date=August 29, 2012 |publisher=University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo (Planetary Habitability Laboratory) |accessdate=September 20, 2012 }} 4. ^1 {{cite web |last=Redd |first=Nola Taylor |title=Newfound Alien Planet a Top Contender to Host Life |url=http://www.space.com/17684-alien-planet-gliese-163c-extraterrestrial-life.html |date=September 20, 2012 |publisher=Space.com |accessdate=September 20, 2012 }} 5. ^https://arxiv.org/abs/1306.1717 6. ^{{Cite web|url=http://exoplanet.eu/catalog/gj_163_b/|title=Planet Gj 163 b|publisher=Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia|accessdate=2013-06-15}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://exoplanet.eu/catalog/gj_163_c/|title=Planet Gj 163 c|publisher=Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia|accessdate=2013-06-15}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=http://exoplanet.eu/catalog/gj_163_d/|title=Planet Gj 163 d|publisher=Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia|accessdate=2013-06-15}} 9. ^So at http://exoplanet.eu/, but eccentricity of an elliptic orbit cannot be equal or exceed 1.
