The 435,000-square foot, $240 million facility has been controversial for its cost. Construction started in July 2009.[2] It accepted its first prisoners in July 2012, with the state planning for all 1,050 state prisoners formerly housed out of state (in private prisons in Colorado and Arizona) to be housed in Goose Creek by September 2013.[3][4] References1. ^http://www.correct.state.ak.us/institutions/gccc/docs/071212_GOOSE_CREEK_FAQ_SHEET.pdf 2. ^http://www.correct.state.ak.us/blog/akdoctoday/entry/a_message_from_commissioner_joe 3. ^http://www.alaskadispatch.com/slideshow/photos-inside-goose-creek-prison 4. ^http://www.correct.state.ak.us/blog/akdoctoday/entry/a_message_from_commissioner_joe External links
