It was noted for the first time in 1957, and not found again until 1990.[1][2] Govenia floridana grows up to {{convert|50|cm|in|round=0.5|abbr=on}} tall. It has only 2 leaves, each with a sheath {{convert|3|-|30|cm|in|round=0.5|abbr=on}} long and an elliptical blade up to {{convert|35|cm|in|round=0.5|abbr=on}} long.
