CareerBrentfordA goalkeeper, Cox began his career in the youth team at Division Three side Brentford after joining the club as an apprentice during the 1975–76 pre-season.[2] He made his professional debut in a 3–1 defeat to Bournemouth on 1 January 1977.[3] He also appeared in the following two games against Colchester United and Crewe Alexandra, conceding seven goals.[3] With the side leaking goals, Crystal Palace keeper Tony Burns was brought in on loan, which ended Cox's involvement in the first team in the 1976–77 season.[4] Due to a shortage of players, Cox was named on the bench for a reserve fixture against Northampton Town shortly afterwards.[4] An injury to an outfield player saw Cox enter the outfield as a substitute, scoring the final goal in a 3–0 win.[4] Cox signed his first professional contract in April 1977,[2] but his final competitive appearance for the Bees came on 26 September 1977 in a 1–1 draw with Stockport County.[3] Cox kept goal in Alan Nelmes' testimonial match versus Division One side Chelsea in 1978, conceding 8 goals in a heavy defeat.[5] He departed the club in the summer of 1979.[4] Margate (loan)Cox joined Southern League Premier Division strugglers Margate on loan in September 1978, making one appearance as cover for regular custodian Steve Bowtell.[12] Non-league footballAfter his release from Brentford in 1979, Cox dropped into Non-League football and played for Wokingham Town, Addlestone & Weybridge Town, Hillingdon Borough and South Ascot.[12] AldershotCox made a return to the Football League with Aldershot in January 1985,[2] making 16 Division Four appearances before his departure in 1986.[6] Slough Town (loan and permanent signing)Cox joined Isthmian League Premier Division side Slough Town on loan in October 1985, making 12 appearances before being sidelined with a double arm fracture and a broken collarbone in a league match versus Sutton United on 23 November.[6] After recovering, he joined the Rebels permanently in April 1986 and made the last of a further 22 appearances in November that year.[7] He stayed on at the club and became assistant manager.[6] Personal lifeIn the 1990s, Cox worked in Bracknell with former Aldershot teammate Tommy Langley, working as a photocopier and fax machine salesman.[8] Career statistics
