Its jurisdiction encompasses an area of {{Convert|681.96|sqkm|sqmi|abbr=on}}.[2][3] It is also part of the planning body of the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority.[4] M. Hari Narayanan is the present municipal commissioner of the city.[5] HistoryVisakhapatnam is one of the earliest municipality in the region. It was setup as a municipality in 1858 later upgraded as corporation in 1979. In 21 November 2005 Government of Andhra Pradesh has released a GO to create a Greater Municipal Corporation and it was first Greater municipal corporation in the state of Andhra Pradesh.[6][7] The Anakapalli and the Bheemili municipalities were incorporated.[8] Administration and aboutThe area of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is {{convert|681.96|km2|mi2|abbr=on}}.[2] The Corporation is administered by an elected body headed by the Mayor.
