StyleRichard Wathen's paintings are primarily portraits and his works have been compared to those of Thomas Gainsborough[2][3] in their subject matter and composition, though with a "strangeness"[3] or "uneasiness"[4] about them, even something "eerie"[2] or "grotesque."[5] His works are often described as being initially familiar,[5][6] with their similarity to historical portraiture in composition and technique, but upon further inspection revealing "disquieting details"[6] which contribute to the sense of eerie strangeness.
