Greg Smith (born 1970 in DeKalb, IL) is an American interdisciplinary artist based out of Brooklyn, NY.

Early life and education

Smith was born in DeKalb, IL in 1970. He relocated to Massachusetts where he received a BA from Amherst College in 1993. In the year 2000, Smith graduated from Harvard University with a PhD in Physics in May 2015. It was not until 2005 that Smith received an MFA from Hunter College in New York City after looking for a change from the world of science.

Career and work

Smith’s art practice consists of Installation art, sculpture, and video.

Smith has exhibited artwork nationally and internationally. Outside of New York, he has had solo shows in Chattanooga TN, Chicago IL, and Grinnell IA. He has also participated in group exhibitions at institutions nationally; The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta, GA, Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC, and Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill, NY.[1] This includes film screenings at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC and Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn. Reviews of his work have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, The New York Times, and Paper Mag.

John Yau, in a Hyperallergic article, describes Smith as “an absurdist inventor, a performer attracted to risk, a scientist he did get a PhD in Physics from Harvard, by the way, an analytical storyteller who refuses to settle for easy parodies, and, perhaps most importantly, an artist who is too self-respectful to take shortcuts or feints.”[2]

Greg Smith is represented by Susan Inglett Gallery, NYC. [3]
