Grey River Beach is located in the area, and contains car parking and picnic facilities. Surf Life Saving Australia notes that the beach "is often more boulder than sand" and "unsuitable for safe bathing, apart from in the protected tidal pools at high tide." The coastline in this area is commonly used for rock fishing.[2] In 1918, it was reported that the mouth of the Grey River would be renamed "Suvla Bay", among a number of other Great Ocean Road locations renamed after World War I battlefields. The name did not stick in common use and was never formally gazetted.[3][4] In December 2015, the locality was briefly evacuated due to the bushfires that severely damaged nearby Wye River and Separation Creek, and was subject to numerous bushfire warnings in the following days as serious fears were held that the fire, at the time still out of control, would burn in its direction.[5][6] References1. ^{{cite VICNAMES|101376|Grey River|accessdate=15 October 2014}} {{Great Ocean Road}}{{Towns in Colac Otway Shire}}2. ^{{cite web | url=http://beachsafe.org.au/beach/vic363 | title=Grey River | publisher=Surf Life Saving Australia | work=Beachsafe | accessdate=15 October 2014}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=The Great Ocean Road |date=17 September 1918 |newspaper=The Argus |location=Melbourne |page=8 |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article1431575 |accessdate=15 October 2014}} 4. ^{{cite conference |last=Kerr |first=Rosemary |title=Roads and Remembrance: Meaning, Memory and Forgetting along Australia's Great Ocean Road |date=June 2012 |conference=Tourism, Roads and Cultural Itineraries: Meaning, Memory and Development |location=Quebec |url=http://www.whtrn.ca/Data/Sites/1/media/kerr.roads-and-remembrance--meaning,-memory-and-forgetting-along-australia%E2%80%99s-great-ocean-road-.pdf |format=PDF |accessdate=15 October 2014 }} 5. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/bushfire-forces-evacuation-of-wye-river-and-separation-creek/news-story/4cb4bb73543b5f0f40177fd7e3100da6 | title=Bushfire forces evacuation of Wye River and Separation Creek | work=The Australian | date=25 December 2015 | accessdate=3 March 2016}} 6. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/news/geelong/great-ocean-road-bushfire-three-towns-to-be-evacuated-on-new-years-eve/news-story/8e671e1d208ada3593c5e73107688b01?nk=684e0febd8e184ebc43707da2c2aa910-1456964366 | title=Great Ocean Road bushfire: Three towns to be evacuated on New Year’s Eve | work=Geelong Advertiser | date=31 December 2015 | accessdate=3 March 2016}} 3 : Towns in Victoria (Australia)|Coastal towns in Victoria (Australia)|Otway Ranges |
