Guangzhou No.2 High School (Chinese: 廣州市第二中學), is a Chinese public high school in Guangzhou. The school was established in Aug 1930[1]. A well-known high school in Science City, Guangzhou, China established multiple new campuses in Guangzhou, resulting in the need to use a broader school name. Currently, there are four fully operational campuses: Yingyuan Campus, Science City Campus, Yingyuan Private School, and Suyuan Campus. Two campuses are operated by independent administrators under the names Kai-yuan Elementary School and Zengcheng Yingyuan Middle School. One campus remains under construction and will open soon.

Campuses

Yingyuan Campus

Yingyuan was built in 1930 and now is mostly used to serve junior children who have graduated from nearby elementary schools. Located on the south slope of Yuexiu Hill, it was the only school campus before the establishment of the Science City campus. It is a public school funded by the Chinese government.

Science City Campus

Science City campus was built in 2005 on Suyuan Hill in Guangzhou Science City. It is also a public school, but renowned all over Guangzhou for its classroom equipment and labs, sports infrastructure, campus environment, and high-quality education. The campus mainly serves Chinese high school students from grade 10 to 12. [2]

Yingyuan Private School

This private school is funded by the administrative budget from Yingyuan Campus, which is where it gets its name. The campus is relatively small; however, the education provided is also renowned in downtown Guangzhou.

Suyuan Experimental Private School

[3] Located at the bottom of Suyuan Mountain, this school provides boarding halls for students in grades 7-9, which was uncommon among public schools at the time when it was established. Parents favor the campus for the boarding opportunity it provides to students, which can enhance their independence and socialization. Due to its location far from the city, the campus also provides larger rooms and greater infrastructure than schools in downtown, although it was criticized for inconvenient transportation between home and campus since a majority of students lived in downtown. The boarding trend for grade 7-9 students become popular now, and the transportation problem was addressed in 2017 by the newly opened MTR station, Suyuan Station.

Huiyuan School

The full name is Guangzhou Huangpu Huiyuan School (zh:广州市黄埔区会元学校).

Kai-yuan Elementary School

The public school was opened in September 2018 to serve children in Huangpu District. However, disputes occurred in the next semester when school administrators issued a mandatory student-remove order, which reassigned students from the campus to nearby local schools to comply with tightened quota-budget, which is the government funding that depends on the number of students.[4]

Demography

The student body of the school consists of:

99.5% Chinese students, 0.5% Caucasian students

99% of students are Chinese citizens, and 1% are non-citizen with educational visas or permanent resident status

Most of the students and teachers are Cantonese speakers.

Education

Guangzhou No.2 High School has a well-established reputation for education. Guangzhou No.2 High School is ranked second place among high schools in Guangzhou, Guangdong, both officially and unofficially. Before 2017, the Gao-kao score report of Guangzhou No.2 High School always ranked just after the top school in Guangzhou, which is the Affiliated School of South China Normal University. Since 2017, public high schools can no longer publish their Gao-kao score reports due to an explicit ban in a controversial executive order from the Ministry of Education, Guangzhou Branch, which claims the ban helps to "abate the concept of competition" and "establish fairness" for students. Due to its lower entrance requirements and its satisfying Gao-kao results each year, many families choose Guangzhou No.2 High School as the most economical choice. Additionally, the top schools in Guangzhou promote the concept of "elite education" instead of the "education for exams" that exists in schools with a lower ranking; many families also choose the school for its value of freedom, diversity of lessons, abundant lab access, international insight, and opportunity for unique development. Consequently, students graduate with many competitive skills, beyond just studying and testing. Many students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities sponsored by school officials and the student union, in which they exercise skills such as leadership, collaboration, communication, teamwork, liberal values, and respect for diversity. [5]

Campus Culture

Motto

"立志成才,振興中華", which advocates hard work for students in order to use their knowledge in the future to remunerate the Republic of China (ROC).

Campus Values

Guangzhou No.2 High School values freedom and diversity. Although the school executives often claim their authority over students in formal meetings and important conferences, the school has implemented a series of laissez-faire policies in many aspects of student life, including cellphone usage, crushes, boarding hall management, and presence requirements. Many students find their own lifestyle under these policies and enjoy their high school life, which has generated countless positive responses. The school also values free speech and diversity among students. Many students with different ethnic backgrounds or language preferences also find themselves to be respected by teachers and peers. Along with Mandarin, which is mandated by rules of the Chinese government, a number of teachers also teach with Cantonese. However, students find no problems with this and enjoy classes even more.

Campus cultural clothing

There are a series of T-shirts and hoodies designed by alumni. The most famous one is the "Yi-Zhong-Ren series", in Cantonese “義忠仁”, which achieved its prevalence both inside and outside of the school campuses. There have been disputes between the uniform policies and cultural clothing, ending in executives' assertion of authority over the school uniform but ignoring other clothing when it comes to enforcement of these policies.

Extracurricular Activities

The Science City School is renowned for numerous extracurricular activities, which have also rendered the school outstanding among most of its competitors in the city's downtown and other areas.

Annual Arena

The Annual Arena was held jointly by multiple executive teams and deemed as the most important event of the year. During the two-day arena, classes were suspended so students could focus on the event and enjoy their experience. An Introduction Performance of the arena is held every year in which each class performs a short dance in front of executives and teachers. Many classes ask their members to practice the performance in advance to improve the quality of the performance. The arena also includes competition in various fields of athletics and the "funny competition" set in the theme of group games or fun games. Many high-tech elements are also included in the arena, such as filming drones and sophisticated video recorders. The school also temporarily recruits professional DJs and photography teams to stimulate and record the arena.[6]

Concert of Music Creators

This activity held by the Student Union is unique to Guangzhou No.2 High School.

Incidents

Redistribution of Wifi Access Permission (2016)

In 2016, the access permission of the within-campus wifi system was redistributed by administrators. Each teacher, executive, and staff member is issued a unique combination of a username and a password. Before this change, all personnel within school limits could connect to the wifi without WPA authentication, which provided convenient and fast access to internet because the LTE network was covered poorly on the campus. The redistribution indirectly revoked all wifi access permission of students, arousing some debate and criticism.

Lab fire (2017)

The lab building in Science City Campus caught fire in 2017 because of sundries posited under the building. It was reported that the sundries self-combusted due to the dry environment; the fire spread to surrounding trees, the chemical preparation room, and chemical labs on the first floor. Luckily, it was Sunday, when few people were on campus, and the fire didn't reach the chemical reagents stored in the preparation room. The fire was soon extinguished by local fire departments. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Dispute of Cellphone Ban (2017)

In the second semester of 2017, the Multiple High Executives of grade 10 issued a joint policy that the use of cellphones would no longer be allowed in the school. The policy, urged by a group of parents, resulted from many reports of cellphone abuse under previous laissez-faire policies; many students were found using cellphones during inappropriate times (during classes, tests, and nighttime studying). The ban was fiercely opposed by grade 10 students, as the allowance of cellphones was a long-held policy of the school that demonstrated the freedom and humanity valued by prior principals and executive teams. In fact, many labs and classes required in-class use of cellphones to finish assignments, and many students used their smartphones to study efficiently in their spare time. The policy was also criticized for unequal and biased treatment of students of grade 10 because students from grade 11 and 12 were not subject to the ban and could continue to use their phones. Under pressure from students and parents, executives held an unofficial conference at the end of the semester to revoke the ban. [7]
