释义 |
The Guiana United Muslim Party (GUMP) was a political party in Guyana. HistoryThe party was set up in 1964 with assistance from the CIA and the British authorities, and was led by Hoosein Ganie.[1][2] The American and British governments hoped the new party, together with the Justice Party (which the CIA was also funding), would take votes from the People's Progressive Party (PPP), whose left-wing leanings they were concerned about.[3] Although the CIA estimated that the Justice Party and GUMP could win three seats in the 1964 general elections,[1] neither did; GUMP received only 0.5% of the vote and failed to win a seat,[4] whilst the PPP emerged as the largest party, but was unable to form a government. In the 1968 elections it received only 0.3% of the vote and again failed to win a seat. The party did not contest any further elections.[5] References1. ^1 Stephen G Rabe (2006) U.S. Intervention in British Guiana: A Cold War Story, Univ of North Carolina Press, p130 {{Guyanese political parties}}{{Guyana-party-stub}}{{islam-org-stub}}2. ^The Indian presence in Guyana Stabroek News, 28 May 2009 3. ^The 1964 election campaign Guyana.org 4. ^Nohlen, D (2005) Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume I, pp366-368 {{ISBN|978-0-19-928357-6}} 5. ^Nohlen, p365 5 : Defunct political parties in Guyana|Islamic political parties|Islam in Guyana|1964 establishments in British Guiana|Political parties established in 1964 |
