Kaper was born in Alkmaar, Netherlands,[3] and earned a Ph.D. in 1965 from the University of Groningen under the supervision of Adriaan Isak van de Vooren.[4] He taught briefly at Groningen before joining Argonne.[3] At Argonne, he directed the Mathematics and Computer Science Division.[7] He is also the editor-in-chief of SIAM News, the newsletter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).[5] In 1989 he became correspondent of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.[6] Since retiring, Kaper has investigated the mathematics of climate change, and directs the NSF-funded Mathematics and Climate Research Network.[1] With Hans Engler of Georgetown, he is a co-author of the book Mathematics and Climate (SIAM, 2013),[7][8][9][10] which won the 2013 ASLI Choice Award of the Atmospheric Science Librarians International.[11] In 2009, Kaper and his son Tasso J. Kaper (a mathematician at Boston University) were simultaneously honored as fellows of SIAM.[12] References1. ^1 Home page, Argonne National Laboratory, retrieved 2015-02-08. 2. ^CMP History, School of Music, UIUC, retrieved 2015-02-08. 3. ^1 2 Faculty profile, University of Groningen, retrieved 2015-02-08. 4. ^{{mathgenealogy|id=117044}} 5. ^About SIAM News, retrieved 2015-02-08. 6. ^{{cite web|author= |url=https://www.knaw.nl/en/members/correspondents/4339 |title=Hans Kaper |publisher=Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences |date= |accessdate=18 July 2015}} 7. ^{{citation|title=Review of Mathematics and Climate by H.
