It won the 1941 Australian Literature Society Gold Medal.[1] White did not allow the novel to be republished in his lifetime. Not until 2012 would the book come back into print.[2] White had dedicated the novel to artist Roy De Maistre. The book owed much to White's experiences as a jackaroo working at Adaminaby in the Snowy Mountains of Southern New South Wales.[3] References1. ^"Medal for Author of Happy Valley"" The Sydney Morning Herald, 19 February 1941, p13 {{Patrick White}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Happy Valley}}{{1930s-novel-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://textpublishing.com.au/books-and-authors/book/happy-valley/ |title=Happy Valley – Text Publishing |publisher=Textpublishing.com.au |date=2012-08-22 |accessdate=2014-02-05}} 3. ^{{cite web|author=David Marr |url=http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/books/patrick-whites-rare-first-novel-revived-for-a-new-audience-20120525-1za3g.html |title=Patrick White's rare first novel revived for a new audience |publisher=Sydney Morning Herald |date=2012-05-26 |accessdate=2014-02-05}} 4 : Novels by Patrick White|1939 Australian novels|Adaminaby|ALS Gold Medal winning works |
