He served as interior minister from 1993 to 1997. He resigned from office following the Luxor massacre. CareerAlfi was the governor of Asyut province until 18 April 1993.[1][2] He was appointed interior minister by President Hosni Mubarak to the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Atef Sedki on 18 April 1993, replacing Abdul Halim Moussa.[2][3] Alfi was not a member of Mubarak's party when he was appointed.[4] Alfi implemented heavy-handed security steps to crack down on the Islamist militants, reducing their hit-and-run attacks during his tenure.[5] However, Alfi resigned from office on 18 November 1997, the day after more than 60 people were murdered by Gama'a al Islammiya in Luxor.[6][7][8] He was succeeded by Habib Al Adli as interior minister.[9][10] Assassination attemptAlfi survived an assassination attempt in Cairo perpetrated allegedly by Islamist militants on 18 August 1993.[1][11] However, he was seriously injured in the attack which claimed the lives of at least four people, one of whom was his bodyguard.[1][12] Egyptian Islamic Jihad was the perpetrator of the attack.[13] ControversyAlfi was tried in Cairo's criminal court due to the allegations of corruption and abuse of power in 1998.[17] The claims were brought by the lawyers of Al Shaab newspaper, an Islamist-oriented daily.[14][15] References1. ^1 2 {{cite news|author=Miriam Sami|title=Gunmen wound Egypt's interior minister, kill 4|url=http://www.deseretnews.com/article/305460/GUNMEN-WOUND-EGYPTS-INTERIOR-MINISTER-KILL-4.html?pg=all|accessdate=3 March 2013|newspaper=Deseret News|date=18 August 1993}} {{s-start}}{{s-off}}{{s-bef|before=Abdul Halim Moussa}}{{s-ttl|title=Minister of Interior|years=1993 – 1997}}{{s-aft|after=Habib Al Adli}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Alfi, Hassan Al}}2. ^1 {{cite book|title=Middle East Contemporary Survey: 1993 - Vol. 17|year=1995|publisher=Westview Press|location=Boulder, CO|url=https://www.questia.com/read/99922925/middle-east-contemporary-survey-1993|author=Ami Ayalon|accessdate=14 October 2013}}{{Subscription required|via=Questia}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Mubarak dismisses interior minister|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=WdFPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=zgcEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3677,5650294&dq=abdul+halim+moussa&hl=en|accessdate=28 December 2012|newspaper=Ocala Star Banner|date=11 January 1993|location=Cairo}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=Mubarak fires interior minister|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=OodSAAAAIBAJ&sjid=0hIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3986,5550052&dq=abdul+halim+moussa&hl=en|accessdate=28 December 2012|newspaper=The Milwaukee Sentinel|date=19 April 1993|location=Cairo}} 5. ^{{cite journal|author=Khaled Dawoud|title=Light at the end of the tunnel?|journal=Al Ahram Weekly|date=1–7 April 1999|volume=423|url=http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/1999/423/eg6.htm|accessdate=6 September 2013|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20081010144500/http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/1999/423/eg6.htm|archivedate=10 October 2008|df=dmy-all}} 6. ^{{cite news|title=Interior Minister quits after Egyptian massacre|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/32477.stm|accessdate=28 December 2012|work=BBC|date=19 November 1997}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=November 1997|url=http://rulers.org/1997-11.html|work=Rulers|accessdate=10 April 2013}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Egypt’s Islamists caught in a bind|url=http://mondediplo.com/1998/01/08egypt|accessdate=6 September 2013|newspaper=Le Monde diplomatique|date=8 January 1998|author=Eric Rouleau}} 9. ^{{cite news|title=The Rise and fall of Mubarak|url=http://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2013/02/11/the-rise-and-fall-of-mubarak/|accessdate=5 March 2013|newspaper=Daily News Egypt|date=11 February 2013|author=Rana Muhammad Taha|author2=Hend Kortam|author3=Nouran El Behairy}} 10. ^{{cite news|title=Egypt's police: From liberators to oppressors|url=http://www.egyptindependent.com/news/egypts-police-liberators-oppressors|accessdate=6 September 2013|newspaper=Egypt Independent|date=24 January 2011|author=Ahmad Zaki Osman}} 11. ^{{cite web|title=Egyptian Islamic Jihad|url=http://www.mideastweb.org/Middle-East-Encyclopedia/egyptian_islamic_jihad.htm|work=Encyclopedia of the Middle East|accessdate=28 December 2012}} 12. ^{{cite news|author=Youssef M.
