At least 30 of the dead were civilians.[1][2][3] According to a UN report, 30 people were killed.[4] A video posted online on 11 June, entitled "The storming and cleansing of Hatla", showed fighters waving the black Salafi flag and celebrating. The language used in the videos is sectarian. "This is the Shia, this is the Shia carcass, this is their end," the cameraman says. That video "indicates those responsible were non-Syrians, possibly from Kuwait."[5] According to a Facebook page of Islamist activists from the area, members of the Free Syrian Army and the Islamic extremist Al-Nusra Front rebel groups were involved.[1]{{Dead link|date=September 2014}}{{Citation needed|date=September 2014}} According to opposition activists, most of the dead were pro-government fighters but civilians were killed as well, including women and children.[8][1] Three Shia clerics were also among the dead.[6] Reports said that 30 civilians were killed.[1] Syrian opposition forces also burned civilian houses and a Shia mosque during the takeover.[7][8] 10 rebel fighters were killed during the attack. 150 Shia residents fled to the nearby government-held village of Jafra.[3] The incident may be seen as underlining 'the distorting of the Revolution's image by the Syrian'.[9] References1. ^1 Dozens of Shiites Reported Killed in Raid by Syria Army {{Terrorist attacks in Syria}}{{Syrian civil war}}2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/10114887/60-Shiite-villagers-killed-as-France-warns-of-turning-point-in-Syria.html|title=60 Shiite villagers killed as France warns of 'turning point' in Syria|author=Agence France-Presse|date=12 June 2013|work=Telegraph.co.uk|accessdate=25 October 2014}} 3. ^1 [https://web.archive.org/web/20130612143620/http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/activists-syrian-rebels-attack-village-in-countrys-east-killing-dozens-of-local-shiites/2013/06/12/a050c7e8-d32e-11e2-b3a2-3bf5eb37b9d0_story.html Syrian rebels attack village in country's east, killing dozens of local Shiites, activists say] 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/10303007/Assad-regime-accused-of-string-of-Syria-massacres-in-UN-report.html|title=Assad regime accused of string of Syria massacres in UN report |date=11 September 2013|work=Telegraph.co.uk|accessdate=25 October 2014}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/syria-60-shia-muslims-massacred-in-rebel-cleansing-of-hatla-8656301.html|title=Syria: 60 Shia Muslims massacred in rebel ‘cleansing’ of Hatla|work=The Independent|accessdate=25 October 2014}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/un-says-93000-killed-syria-amid-reports-new-massacre|title=UN says 93,000 killed in Syria amid reports of new massacre|publisher=|accessdate=25 October 2014}} 7. ^{{cite news|title=Reports of 'massacre' in eastern Syria|url=http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2013/06/201361294148169694.html|newspaper=Al Jazeera|date=12 June 2013}} 8. ^1 2 3 [https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=190884583 Syrian Extremist Rebels Raid Shiite Village] {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130613003604/http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=190884583 |date=13 June 2013 }} 9. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22870776|title=Syria rebels 'kill Shia residents of eastern village'|work=BBC News|accessdate=25 October 2014}} 8 : Military operations of the Syrian Civil War in 2013|Mass murder in 2013|Terrorist incidents in Syria in 2013|Massacres of the Syrian Civil War perpetrated by the Free Syrian Army|Violence against Shia Muslims in Syria|Deir ez-Zor Governorate in the Syrian Civil War|June 2013 events|Attacks on Shiite mosques |
