The company, which employs more than 120 people, concentrates on building apps for smartphones and other connected devices, and offers a range of services in Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality. In recent years, it has experienced rapid turnover growth, with revenues rising 160% in 2016.[1] In 2016 the business was named "Newcastle's Best Company to Work For"[2] by ratings site Glassdoor, based on five star reviews from staff, who praised its culture and employee benefits. hedgehog lab takes its name from Jim Collins’ book Good to Great, which features the ‘hedgehog concept’ of cultivating ‘piercing clarity’ in the pursuit of long-term results, while rejecting propositions that ‘fail the hedgehog test’. Historyhedgehog lab founders, Sarat Pediredla and Mark Forster - now CEO and Chief Product Officer respectively - met while working as developers at a Newcastle-based digital agency. After leaving to launch their own business, they created a tool for the financial services sector and soon generated interest in their software-as-a-service offering. Plans, however, were disrupted by the 2008 financial crisis, at which point hedgehog lab switched to a digital agency model. This was later refined to focus on ‘post-PC’ technologies, with the company looking internationally to grow market reach while still a micro-business.[3] After launching sites in London and India, it turned its attention to the US, opening an office in Boston in April 2015. A further office in Austin, Texas, followed a year later and, in January, 2017, it set up a site in Copenhagen. With exports now accounting for a large proportion of revenues, this will become the company's European headquarters,[3] providing access to mainland Europe as well as the Nordics. Having secured £1m of investment from Maven Capital Partners - one of the UK's most active equity houses - hedgehog lab now plans to grow revenues by at least 50% year-on-year until 2020.[4] The cash will be used for increasing the company's delivery capabilities, growing its sales and marketing functions, and exploring further international expansion. Clientshedgehog lab has worked with well-known names including Mitsubishi, B & M, Channel 4, AkzoNobel, England Rugby, Hult International Business School and the Financial Times.{{cn|date=December 2017}} Immersive TechnologyAfter seeing growing interest in Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality, hedgehog lab invested in its own Immersive Technology division,[5] equipped with state-of-the-art kit to develop for headsets like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Microsoft HoloLens. Launched in January, 2017, this is being headed up by one of the UK's leading experts, Shaun Allan, who has many years’ experience in the field,[6] and whose VR pitch recently helped the North East region win the bid to host the Great Exhibition of the North. In 2018 the renamed Team XR moved to their new development studio within Proto, the new emerging technology centre in Gateshead. Awards and recognition
