Biography

Hennadiy Korban was born on May 24, 1970, in Dnipropetrovsk in a Jewish family of Soviet engineers.

In 1990, his elder sister Viktoriia Korban (born in 1962) emigrated to Israel with her family. Parents of Hennadii Korban are also Israeli citizens.

He spent his childhood in Dnipropetrovsk (currently Dnipro) and graduated from secondary school No. 21 in 1987.

After finishing school, he made an unsuccessful attempt to enrol at the faculty of philosophy at a university in Rostov-on-Don, but was not accepted because he failed to provide recommendations from the local communist party authority. The same year Korban returned to Dnipropetrovsk and entered Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute. Soon he suspended his studies and was called up for military service in the Soviet Armed Forces.

From 1988 to 1990 he served as a private in the Guards Aviation Regiment.

In the period of 1990–91, after his discharge from the Army, Korban worked as a broker on the Moscow Stock Exchange "Center Alliance", Russian Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange.

In 1992, Korban founded the brokerage office "Ukraine" in Dnipropetrovsk.

In 1994, Korban founded the OJSC IC "Slavutych Capital". Since 2001 he had been a Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the OJSC IC "Slavutych Capital", that was later abolished.

In 1997, he graduated from the National Mining University of Ukraine, as "economist".

From 2001 to 2010, he was a Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Southern Mining.[2]

In 2005, Korban became a member of the Supervisory Board of Ukrainian oil and gas producer company Ukrnafta, which owns more than 86% of oil, 28% of condensate and 16% of gas of the total production of hydrocarbons in Ukraine.

Since 2009, he is a member of the Supervisory Board of the company Ukrtatnafta.[3]

In 2011, he resigned from the Supervisory Board of "Ukrnafta" and the Supervisory Board of "Ukrtatnafta".

Currently Hennadiy Korban invests in hospitality and commercial office properties. In particular, in September 2013, Hennadiy Korban owned LLC "Budinvest" signed a letter of intent with an international hotel operator InterContinental Hotels Group on the development of network brands in Kiev - Hotel Indigo and Staybridge Suits. Korban’s company will manage those objects, the amount of investment in the construction will be $30–40 million.[4]

Hennadiy Korban is an expert in the field of exchanging trade. №1 specialist in Ukraine in the sphere of "mergers and acquisitions".

In 2013, Forbes-Ukraine magazine estimated the financial standing of Korban in $153 million.[1]

Hennadiy Korban is a member of the Dnipropetrovsk Jewish community[5] Board of Trustees, the patron of the Kryvyi Rih Jewish community.[6] Korban strongly supports the revival and development of Jewish life in Kryvyi Rih. He financed the construction of the kindergarten "Beit Alon Ganey Korban" and a sports complex for children.[7][8]

Political career

Korban was deputy governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast from 2 March 2014[9] till 24 March 2015.[10][11] He was appointed and resigned the same dates as former Governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Ihor Kolomoyskyi.[10][11]

Korban becomes head of the party UKROP political council on September 9, 2015.[12] This party was founded on 18 June 2015.[13]

Korban took part in the 26 July 2015 parliamentary by-election in constituency 205 located in Chernihiv for the party UKROP.[17] He lost these elections to Serhiy Berezenko of Petro Poroshenko Bloc (who won with 35.90% of the vote).[17] Korban took second place with 14.76%.[14] During the run-up to these elections Korban and Berezenko were repeatedly accused of bribing voters, the use of black PR and other violations (of the electoral legislation).[15][16]

Korban was the UKROP candidate for Mayor of Kiev in the October 2015 Kiev local elections. But he did not make it to the second round of the mayoral election.[17]

On 31 October 2015, Korban was arrested.[18][19][20][21]

Four charges were brought against Korban including a charge accusing him of embezzling money from National Defence Foundation he financed.[22] An attempt to impose a pre-trial restraint was made by three judicial authorities including the Chernihiv District Court and the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv, but this attempt failed for lack of evidence.[23] Korban was put under house arrest.[24]

Later, on December 24, 2015, Korban was repeatedly kidnapped by the Security Service officers and brought before the Dniprovskyi District Court of Kyiv. The hearing with Mykola Chaus as a presiding judge lasted 36 hours and resulted in pre-trial detention of Korban.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in his report spoke about exceptional character of this case. Among other things, he points out that from December 24 to December 27, 2015 Korban was forced to undergo few investigative procedures in spite of the fact that he had had a heart surgery and needed special after treatment. However, he was brought before the court under pressure. Hearing lasted more than 24 hours and was characterised by repeated violation of the rights for the due process trial, which points to torture and physical mistreatment.[25][26]

During the trial Valentyn Manko gave testimony against Korban which was later found to be part of a scheme to provide false testimony to ensure a guilty verdict. In exchange for his testimony robbery charges against Manko would be dropped.[27]  On December 27, the courtroom was stormed by unknown protesters who clashed with Korna supporters.[28]

On January 23, 2016, while Korban was jailed by the Security Service, the political council of UKROP party decided to suspend him from the exercise of his managerialduties. Many allies of Korban declared that the party’s spontaneous decision was a set-up of Ihor Kolomoyskyi and transcribed it as act of perfidy. It was reported afterwards that Korban’s arrest was independent of any ongoing conflict or reported potential coup planned by Kolomoyskyi.[29] Kolomoyskyi noted that Korban was “independent” in an interview in Geneva.[30]

Korban is not a member of UKROP anymore.[31]

Early March 2016 the court granted him permission to travel to Israel for treatment at Tel Aviv Medical Center where he soon started receiving treatment.[32]

On May 7, 2016, after Korban had fulfilled the demands of his political opponents, the court released him from arrest and granted permission to leave for Israel.

On August 9, 2016, Mykola Chaus, the judge of the Dniprovskyi District Court of Kyiv who ordered the detention of Korban, was caught with $150,000 bribe by National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.[33]

In September 2017, Korban was absolved of all charges of the Prosecutor General’s Office for lack of evidence. Also, the Main Directorate of National Police in Dnipropetrovsk oblast ceased criminal proceedings on charges of embezzling money from National Defence Foundation for lack of evidence and after having established the facts rehabilitating activity of the Foundation. National Police officially recognised importance of the Foundation from the point of view of national security.

Mykola Chaus ran to Moldova;[34] mass media report that the inner circle of Petro Poroshenko helped him to escape from Ukraine. Now he is waiting for the decision of the Chişinău Court concerning extradition.[35] He is on the international Interpol wanted list.[36] Igor Dodon, the President of Moldova, refused to grant him political asylum.

Now Korban is not engaged in any political activity and does not hold leading positions in any political projects.

On 13 December 2017 Korban has returned to Ukraine.[37]
