Knaggs was born in Camden town, London.[2] He married Ellen Mares and had six children, five girls and a boy (Florence, Mary, Isobel, Nancy, Ethel and Henry Valentine).[3] Knaggs was educated at University College School and then trained as a medical doctor at University College Hospital (the same profession as his father).[1] Knaggs was an active Fellow of the Entomological Society between 1858 and 1863, Knagg then went on to cofound the Entomologist's Monthly Magazine in 1864 and continued to edit until 1874 when pressure from work caused him to resign.[1] His most celebrated work was the publication of [https://www.amazon.com/Lepidopterists-Guide-Henry-Guard-Knaggs/dp/0554596393/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1399577255&sr=1-1&keywords=lepidopterists+guide The Lepidopterists Guide] and [https://openlibrary.org/books/OL21222117M/A_list_of_Macro-Lepidoptera_occurring_in_the_neighbourhood_of_Folkestone.
