It is located {{convert|48|km}} southwest of the county seat, and {{convert|128|km}} from Barkam, the prefecture capital. Construction started in July 2012, and the airport was opened on 28 August 2014. Hongyuan is a high-altitude airport, situated {{convert|3535|m}} above sea level.[1] FacilitiesThe airport has a 3,600-meter runway (class 4C) and a 3,600 square-meter terminal building.
