Pitts attended Texas Christian University and played college football at the center position for the TCU Horned Frogs football team. He was selected by the Central Press Association as a second-team player on its 1954 College Football All-America Team.[1] He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round (23rd overall pick) of the 1956 NFL Draft.
