Room service is organised as a subdivision within the Food & Beverage Department of high-end hotel and resort properties. It is uncommon for room service to be offered in hotels that are not high-end, or in motels. Room service may also be provided for guests on board cruise ships.[1] Room service may be provided on a 24-hour basis or limited to late night hours only. Due to the convenience of room service and the minibar, prices charged to the patron are higher than the hotel's restaurant or tuck shop. HistoryThe Waldorf Astoria in New York first introduced hotel room service in the early 19th century.[2][3] To address clinical issues and reduce mortality rates related to nutritional issues, the Mater Private Hospital Brisbane in Australia, became the first to offer room service in a hospital setting, providing more appropriate nutrition at an affordable price point. This change occurred in 2013.
