Qualification for the men's tournament at the 2018 Winter Olympics was determined by the IIHF World Ranking following the 2015 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships. The host along with the top eight teams in the world ranking received automatic berths into the Olympics, while all other teams had an opportunity to qualify for the remaining three spots in the Olympics.[1] This was the fourth time world rankings were used but the first time that the championships three years prior was used as the final determination. Qualified teams
Qualification seedingTo qualify directly, a nation had to be ranked in the top eight following the 2015 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships.[1] Using the IIHF World Ranking points system, the current year received full value, and each preceding year was worth 25% less. Teams that wished to compete had to apply in April 2015. The following is a ranking based on points already accumulated toward Olympic qualification of all countries participating in 2015. Points were earned based on overall finish in 2015:
Preliminary round 1The two lowest ranked participants played off for the right to compete in this round on 10 October 2015, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The round itself was played from 5 to 8 November 2015. The winner of each group advanced to the pre-qualification tournaments as qualifiers seven and eight ranked according their seeding.[5] Playoff game{{Ice hockey box| date = 10 October 2015 | time = 19:30 | bg = #eeeeee | team1 = {{ih-rt|BUL}} | team2 = {{ih|GEO}} | score = 9–1 | periods = (2–1, 3–0, 4–0) | reference = http://reports.iihf.hockey/Hydra/566/IHM566901_74_1_0.pdf | goalie1 = Dimitar Dimitrov Konstantin Mihailov | goalie2 = Andrei Ilienko | progression = 1–0 1–1 2–1 3–1 4–1 5–1 6–1 7–1 8–1 9–1 | goals1 = Boyadjiev (Bozhanov) (SH) – 03:37 Boyadjiev (Gatchev, Bozhanov) – 12:24 Gatchev (Boyadjiev, Mihov) – 20:55 Semkov (Tchaliov, Mihov) – 21:28 Mihov (Boyadjiev) – 33:08 Mihov (Boyadjiev, Gatchev) – 40:36 Stefanov (Boyadjiev, Gatchev) (SH) – 45:58 Gatchev (Boyadjiev, Mihov) – 49:05 Gatchev (Blagoev, Boyadjiev) (PP) – 55:56 | goals2 = 07:19 – Dumbadze (Oganeziani) | official = {{flagicon|SVK}} Tomáš Orolin | linesman = {{flagicon|BUL}} Kiril Peychinov | linesman2 = {{flagicon|SVK}} Matúš Stanzel | stadium = Winter Sports Palace, Sofia | attendance = 581 | penalties1 = 14 | penalties2 = 12 | shots1 = 51 | shots2 = 11 }} Group KGames were played at Tallinn, Estonia.[6] {{#invoke:Sports table|main|style=WL OT|update=complete |source=IIHF |team1=EST |team2=MEX |team3=ISR |team4=BUL |win_EST=3 |OTwin_EST=0 |OTloss_EST=0 |loss_EST=0 |gf_EST=58|ga_EST=4 |status_EST=H |win_MEX=2 |OTwin_MEX=0 |OTloss_MEX=0 |loss_MEX=1 |gf_MEX=16|ga_MEX=15 |win_ISR=1 |OTwin_ISR=0 |OTloss_ISR=0 |loss_ISR=2 |gf_ISR=6 |ga_ISR=26 |win_BUL=0 |OTwin_BUL=0 |OTloss_BUL=0 |loss_BUL=3 |gf_BUL=4 |ga_BUL=39 |name_EST={{ih|EST}} |name_MEX={{ih|MEX}} |name_ISR={{ih|ISR}} |name_BUL={{ih|BUL}} |class_rules = 1) points; 2) head-to-head points; 3) head-to-head goal difference; 4) head-to-head number of goals scored; 5) result against closest best-ranked team outside tied teams; 6) result against second-best ranked team outside tied teams; 7) seeding before tournament. |result1=PR |res_col_header=Q |col_PR=green1 |text_PR=Pre-qualification }}All times are local (UTC+2).{{Ice hockey box | date = 5 November 2015 | time = 15:00 | bg = #eeffff | team1 = {{ih-rt|MEX}} | team2 = {{ih|BUL}} | score = 8–2 | periods = (1–0, 3–2, 4–0) | reference = http://reports.iihf.hockey/Hydra/567/IHM567901_74_3_0.pdf | goalie1 = Alfonso de Alba | goalie2 = Dimitar Dimitrov Nikola Nikolov | progression = 1–0 1–1 2–1 2–2 3–2 4–2 5–2 6–2 7–2 8–2 | goals1 = J.
